While I don't necessarily disagree with your statement, I'd phrase it "getting Peter (who has the resources) to help Paul (the little guy) and I don't see that as being unfair. Because if Paul wasn't there, Peter would not be able to play. Don Kennedy |

I can go with your interpretation. It actually depicts the situation better! Not saying it is unfair but it is a different financial model that makes comparison somewhat biased. In reality the few really well heeled teams should be providing more financial support. If say Subaru is spending massive dollars to VSC and they are all making a living and profit yet the organizers are struggling to break even , you get my drift. The costs to go overseas and try the GRC is enough to finance the rally series for everyone I'd bet.

How about this: Same entry fee for everyone... it's 4% of your vehicle's value. Grassroots: $8,000 car, $320 entry fee Mid level: $20,000 car, $800 entry What I'm told are about $250,000 cars at VTSC... $10,000. Thanks for your support, Subaru! ![]() Anders Grassroots rally. Plus eleventy-billion! I mean if Gawd didn't want rallyists drinking beer, he wouldn't have invented it, would he? Beer is the fuel that the whole rallyworld runs on. It should be obligatory! I just have my reasons (not DUI related) why I don't drink. I don't hate on people who do drink beer, I did have some delicious memories of beers I have had in the past or a nice glass of red wine. Either way, I drink an energy drink like a cup a coffee in the morning. Although I would drink more coffee if my work allowed me to bring in a hot water boiler but the stupid fire department here won't let us bring in "non-approved heating devices". |

I was more ewwwing the energy drink. There are many important and respectable reasons people choose to avoid alcoholic beverages. I have a feeling in 20-30 years our medical system will find some new illness that is linked to energy drinks. Kinda like smoking and COPD. Or lead exposure and criminality. Or iodine deficiency, bromide toxicity, and cancer. Grant Hughes |

Looking only at the consumer side of the NEFR pricing shows some interesting stuff, particularly for those who are wringing their hands over the ever increasing entry costs.
- For $800, anyone who wanted to could have shown up and rallied the whole weekend. Of the 58 entrants: - 28 chose to pay an additional $700 to be scored in the National Championship. 25 of those 28 (at quick glance) were at Oregon Trail, so can be considered as teams who travel for the National Championships. - 2 chose to pay an additional $1000 to be scored in the National and Regional portions of the event. - 28 were able to race the entire weekend at no extra cost. Some chose to pay between $300 and $400 more for no other reason than to be able to pay later. What this says, in terms of customer appetite, is that while $800 entry fees seem expensive - a significant number of people will choose to pay more than that if given the opportunity. Agreed. We didn't even think - for a second - of spending the money to be in the National at Oregon but that doesn't change the fact that a good number do. As I pointed out, most of the people listed in the National are also traveling across the country, so the extra entry fee is not a large part of the rally budget for the year, which is probably a minimum of $30,000/year for a 6 event championship. (some will be that much per event) First Rally: 2001 Driver (7), Co-Driver (44) Drivers (16) Clerk (10), Official (7), Volunteer (4) Cars Built (1), Engines Built (0) Cages Built (0) Last Updated, January 4, 2015 ![]()

You don't get the fame, fortune, and women if you aren't racing in the national championship! The extra entry cost is a small investment to live like a rock star for the rest of your life.
Regarding later entry fees, some folks really don't know if they can make the event until closer to it. If they are running another event within a few weeks before and want to be sure the car survives, or trying to get time off from work, or whatever. Although, from what I've seen, they probably just can't plan that far ahead, even to save 33%. If you can afford to be lazy...hey, good for you. Tim. |
