A little history explained by a fan...at Rally Estonia
July 19, 2013 10:32PM
Some of you more learned folks know that just a short boat ride from Ralli-Paradis or Finland, is a country full of the cousins: Estonia....very similar in most respects and even during the bad ol' days of Soviet Union, Estonia was a hot-bed of rally activity.
So right now is Rally Estonia and here is Finnish WRC driver, and huge classic rally fan and driver Jari Matti Latvala talking about the car he's driving this weekend, the Group 4 Audi Quattro---what the GpB quattro grew out of:

Enjoy.

Olympus has been reclaimed! Now t.v. needs more rally coverage in general! Watch w.r.c. on mavtv...ratings will keep it airing.

Nice video! I don't now what it is, but his voice has a soothing quality. I'd totally pay him to read me children's books while I fall asleep.....

I just realized that without the youtube header you can't tell, but the link I posted is from the same event JVL posted, where the shifter not only breaks, but pulls out of the car!

Yeah sure, this was a one time rental thing Latval's personal car is a Classic FIA Historic legal Escort Gp4---he ain't stoopid, he knows what cool is...does pretty good too. (although its kind of funny how clean he drives the Escort--a lot less drama that typical...but clean is clean--and he cleans UP!)

So, Here's a question for anyone listening. When JML's shifter broke, he stopped, popped it into 3rd and continued on. If this happened to your car, what gear would you select, what's the selection process? The highest gear you can get the car going from a stop with?

not on stage but once had the opportunity of getting to do this in my '86 saab spg after sitting in 100 degree weather on the Garden State Parkway for an hour the lower plastic bushing on the shifter decided to fall off. I choose 3rd because somewhere at somepoint someone said, if you loose it put it in 3rd, it'll get you home. made it home without getting run over by an angry person in a bmw/audi.

At STPR a couple of years ago, arriving at the start of one of the forest stages, my shifter cable connection broke at the transmission (Ford Focus). I thought I was done but Kieran (codriving for another team a few cars ahead) heard of my plight, ran back down the line to help us (with just a couple of minutes left before they launch). He yelled, "What gear do you want?!". Hmmm, little time to think: 10 mile stage, several tight hairpins, low powered car. Decided on 2nd gear. If I stallled out on those hairpins we'd be stuck.

Kieran manually selected 2nd and told me not touch the shifter. So we laid a bunch of tape over the shifter as a visual clue to me and off we went. Kieran managed to make his launch window too. Do you know how hard it is NOT to shift? In the video with JML you can see him involuntarily move his hand toward the shifter soon after starting. He had it easy since it wasn't there! smiling smiley

Ten miles, almost all of at 7,200 rpm. But the trusty Focus engine kept giving. And, surprisingly, I wasn't caught on stage either.

POR - thanks, Kieran.

Here's Jari's crash on SS5:

I guess "blah blah blah blah" is the Estonian translation of the Finnish "Oi oi oi oi!" smiling smiley
