Got a text from a friend this weekend about GRC. I had been telling him about the Super Lite class of car and how it was a lower budget GRC.
"Just watched GRC Lite. Zzzz." "That being said, just watched GRC. Zzzz." "9 cars start, 5 or so survive. Stupid. First corner, massive pile up. Bla." Grant Hughes |

Well..i think its better than nothing. And for sure better than a couple more hours of infomercials.
Dont know if i would bother traveling and paying to see in person though. Rather travel and spend that money watching a stage rally anywhere else in comparison. Olympus has been reclaimed! Now t.v. needs more rally coverage in general! Watch w.r.c. on mavtv...ratings will keep it airing. |

Yeah, I've caught a couple on tv/youtube that were not too exciting-I'll give you that....... But..now, a somewhat dissenting view about one GRC(Irwindale 2011)-at least from a spectator's point, and I'm about as far from a flat-brimmer as there is-BRO.... Couple years back-I think I heard about it on D.I(DirtyImpreza)-Hey!- they are having a "Euro" Style Rallycross event at Irwindale-about an hour from my house. Mixed surface-all running together like the shit I've watched on youtube. Hmm...Friggin Gronholm's going to be there,Foust,Millen, and a bunch of ex-moto-x doods I've kinda heard of...... I used to spectate at Rim,and Gorman-really the only stage rallies I've been to. I was always kind of upset that when I went to Rim one year, and Petter was there-that I didn't go up and meet him. I wouldn't let that happen this time-although I really wanted to see the racing as well. Hey Kid!-You wanta go meet Gronholm? Hells yeah!-says my 11 yr old boy. I mean I'm not a total WRC fanboy, but I've been watching these WRC guys on TV for years-It's not like I'm going to meet a higher level rally driver-right? Wouldn't mind having a brief chat with one...or even Foust or Rhys.. And then I found out there were not only going to be the Big Dogs racing-but 2wd shitter cars like I can really relate too!(and almost afford). Even one guy on one of my Focus forums was going to be racing there(things didn't go well for him the day before in practice-so I never met him). With a D.I discount code, our friggin tickets were $10 ea.-unbelievable! We walked in-amazed at how little we just paid to go spectate at a race that I never even heard of on the TV or radio(how could this be?),and then noticed we pretty much (almost) had the whole grandstands for ourselves-what the fuck? What is this? How are they making money? We sit down in our seats-at the start line-just feet from the line up of open class Fiesta's,Subies, and and a Skoda as they prepare for take-off. Video doesn't do these cars justice-It's Holy-Fuck Loud(at least at Irwindale)when these things are lined up shooting machine-gun fire at launch together...It was great! Poor quality vid-but what I'm talking about: Then we walk over to the pits-there's Gronholm,Foust ,Millen- I forget- Deegan? Mirra, just hanging out in their respective service areas. We meet them all-and they were all very nice....particularly Gronholm. I mean-for all I knew he could act like stuck-up Euro(Scandic?Nordic?)-trash-but he was very warm, put his arm around my son for pics, and we talked for a couple minutes. Over in the regular guy area of the pits I saw a 2wd focus, and being a Focus Guy I had to go check it out... The car said Van Way on the side-and I remembered seeing the car online somewhere-but didn't really know who the guy was at the time. Then I saw the guy in the driver's suit-seemed like just a kid! A nice kid-but I was grilling him with questions about his car-and he had some answers-but seemed unsure on others-telling me doesn't really do the work on the car too much! I was kinda surprised at that-but I guess he can drive-at least when a civics not taking him out-(towards the end of this vid): Anyway-longish story shortish-I headed over to grab some Carnitas tacos and an asada burrito from the King taco stand(Yum!),and watched some more open class and regular old Mazdas ,Fords,Hondas and Toyotas battle it out-and it was fun! Not one of the better battles, but what i could find: Yeah..I said it .....GRC was FUN!! Found out later on that the 2wd guys didn't get there prize $$ And GRC was run by monkeys. And they got rid of 2wd competitors.. ![]() Well...this weekend at Irwindale is another GRC event-the last in the LA area for maybe years it's said.... No more Gronholm..no more 2wd..no more ramp to ramp(can't blame them there). Now it's an x-games event (sigh).....probably won't be the same. Place will probably be crawlin' with bro's-but you know what? Only $25 a ticket-wtf-I'm taking my kid again! Where's that taco stand? I'll report back..... ................................................. ..................... Support your Local North American Rally Forum!! I love euro-style rallyx in all forms.
How are they making money you ask? ESPN and the advertisers. "mericans don't "go" to events, they watch it from home. ESPN is providing this to the consumer. I'd pay oodles of money if I could get HD GRC and ERX coverage at home. Me and my buddies have gotten together when the planets have aligned to watch GRC streaming, drinking beers and eating snacks and it's great. Also, having been to the New Hampshire race last year... it's awesome. They just need more competitors and Topi to stop being such a little shithead. |

Yeah stands FULL of spectators for cars that go 180mph an inch from each other, or bikes that sail 35 feet thru the air, or locally stands FULL every Saturday night at local circle track...---'Merikuns don't "go" to events... at least "Topi" is driving, even if it is in an embarrassing featureless 'reality show' made for amusing beer drinking vidiots. There is the money that the series makes and the money that the venue makes and they often have no relationship with each other.
I don't follow the business of F1 anymore, but it used to be that basically F1 just cared about TV deals and the grandstands could be empty as far as they were concerned. alan |

I was never a fan of european rallycross so don't know why I would be of GRC, I've watched it here and there and was mildly entertained. More than roundy round or F1. MotoGP is the only other racing I could watch on TV and be mildly entertained. That said, I don't even watch WRC or ERC anymore. I might get TV next year so I can keep up with EPL now that it's on NBC Sports. If so I'll probably watch occasional broadcasts of motorsports.

Ah yes, familiar with him. Congrats on getting that job! You-know,even though I've morphed into kinda a Ford guy over the years-I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Dodge. It's because when I turned 16-My Dad and stepmother gave me the family hand-me down car(from stepmom-to sister-to other sister-to me), a 1969 Dodge Dart. My first car-complete with dents and scrapes from prior girl/women driving ![]() slightly crumpled grill(deer hit),and a little 273 c.i. V8. Torsion bar front/leaf rear and no sways, car had quite a bit of ground clearance and travel for what it was-I spent more time hauling ass on the fire roads above my house in The San Fernando Valley(and Dirt Mulholland) than I did driving on pavement. It's what I learned car control in.... Anyway, the Fiestas have become too Dominant in GRC.......Boring! It'll be a uphill battle for sure-but I believe I'll be rooting for the Dodges on Sunday! ................................................. .....................
