I wouldn't be so sure. Some people don't agree with me but I strongly believe you don't want to recce in the rally car for many MANY reasons. Gene, you're such a troll sometimes. I agree that where local sensitivities allow, rally cars should be allowed on recce. I fully appreciate that there are some areas we race in where the 'perception' of rally cars on recce can negatively impact the event's standing in the host, or nearby, communities. As someone who's done recce at over 40 events as either a driver or co-driver, and has done so in rental cars/trucks, rally cars, and 'TSD equipped' road cars I can assure you the rally car is the last choice on that list. Clay,
Rally cars need to be street legal , lighting and exhaust. So keep it at the sane level and no problems. Speed limits need to be observed as well as what we call 'quiet zones'. Speed in a quiet zone may be less than posted legal speeds. Quiet zones may contain houses close to the road that could get overwhelmed with dust from a bazillion cars on a normally little used road. There could be kids or dogs in close proximity to the route or a cranky old person (like myself) who isn't fond of noise and traffic. Many people move to the sticks to not be bothered with the outside world. Be aware of Quiet Zones and know that we are very inflexable on abuse in these areas. Recce isn't practice btw, it is to preview the route and make whatever notes you are comfortabl;e with. Hopefully people this year will be a bit more observant and not miss a corner and shortcut the route.... |

Sometimes I'm surprised you can reach the keyboard from a horse that high. You are expressing a strong personal belief (based on experience, no doubt) onto everyone, who might not have another vehicle fit for recce. |

And considering that apart from a cage and suspension the car Chris has is virtually stock engine and trans ...hmmmm sounds completely unsuitable...Harumph (snort snort) Harumph! I guess if he doesn't have a designated prepped recce car it just goes to show that he's not serious enough! Harumph! And seats, and harnesses, and removed sound deadening (presumably), and, and and... Not to mention I never said 'completely unsuitable,' just that it would be my last choice. A properly prepped recce car makes a HUGE difference in doing recce, skidplates and proper tires mostly, but even so there are a lot better choices than the rally car - and lots worse. But hey... that only comes from experience actually doing recce... how could I be such an ass as to share what I've learned from actually doing it. I've seen a fully loaded service truck (no trailer) on recce at a winter event. Yes, that would - generally speaking - be a worse choice than the rally car for recce. 100% in agreement. The most important thing to me in a recce vehicle is maintaining a familiar sight line. Going from a Focus or Volvo to the front seat of an F-250 can produce some vastly different impressions.
Beyond that 'we' can say don't bring a rally car for various reasons but that doesn't stop someone from bringing a very prepped recce car or a stock Sube with WRC decal package. It's a battle I have no interest in and I don't need to financially burden the grass roots friends and competitors that we put the event on for. So recce what you want or have or have to, but behave in an appropriate manner. Easy peasy. |

Man, it's all about recce in the box van! Robert, just use your new two wheeled toy. It might take a better seat, but 10 inches of plush suspension is real nice. |
