Those look like a handfull. Interesting setups for 5th wheel towing. After participating in several events using an open pickup truck as a service vehicle I have become a fan of enclosed service vehicles. Either a pickup with a cap or a van/box truck. Both give you dry local service truck space.
Personally I think I am going to try a van for a while. Matt Smith Racing in glorious black and red My daily life is a Saab story (sold!) |

Adam, you want a cheap generic whiter 1 ton van with a big V8? Sorry Matt it's like 2 1/2 miles away, and that might be a bit far to go for a rust free, straight, Ford (ooooooh how appropriate) I mean the truth is that just like buying an expensive base car to make into a rally car if you spend a huge shit load on the intitial vehicvle, there's then that much left for USING it. Buy a 400-600 van, put GOOD tires, fresh brakes, and maybe a gearbox (this one thing fawked me several times on the way to events, used or so called "rebuilt" until I got my current van which has MANUAL TRANS!!!!, get a decent used alternator and starter, change the diff oil. You could also have MY Ford for reasonable money.
'72 F-600 Boxvan (former U-Haul) with a 20' box. Comes with ramps to park your rallycar + all the shit you need fo rallying inside with it. For the right money I'll leave the fancy-butt stereo in it. JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

JOHN,
what would it take to put a diesel in any of these vehicles we're considering. your f-600 for instance. surly there are some cummins motors that would fit under the hood. "I put the hurt on dirt" - adam crane http://CraneRallyCrew.com corolla gt-s "Patches" Op: S.S. |

I have seen this flavor of truck with the 'Baby-Cat' and the 5.9 Cummins.
The trans in it is the New Venture 4500 five speed thing that Dodge fitted behind the 5.9 diesel. Lots of room under the hood. A clever feller would find hisself a very bent Duramax+Allison six speed GM two wheel drive truck and fit it. Hell it would be quieter then the current gas motor. The Duramax+ Allison combination is a real winner. FWIW the 369(?) CID FE series (think Ford 362,390, 427) truck engine runs well and does NOT have the original carburator that ran so poorly and had the governor. JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

I use a '92 Chevy 3500 Van, with the 7.4L TBI V8, and the 4L80E transmission. 235,000+ miles on the engine, somewhere around 22,000 on the transmission. When filled with tools, transmissions (2 fwd mazdogs, 1 awd mazdog, and 1 volvo auto) Engines (1 350 and 1 2.3L volvo), and towing a pickup (82 chevy 1500) on my 18' all-steel dual-axle open trailer, I got somewhere between 11 and 12 mpg on a long interstate cruise, about 6 hours, at 75+mph, closer to 80.
I get the same mileage when the thing is absolutely empty, driving ~60 on regular slow roads. Of course, right now I'm dreaming of a nice I6 Turbo Diesel setup to put in the 1947 Chevy 1.5 ton truck just sitting around at my grandma's old farm. I think that would make a spectacularly neat tow-rig. I haven't decided if I want an auto or manual, but I'm leaning towards an auto, say the 6-speed allison, since navigating through the Chicago area happens several times a year, and a manual trans gets painful after awhile when traffic goes slower than 1st gear idle speed... --sarge ---** To be in compliance with the Anarchy **--- Jorden R.
