So i have an GLH-T omni...
November 07, 2007 05:14PM
...and im thinking about taking it to the next rallycross event for giggles. Its a fun street car. Still running stock turbo and too much boost, ill pull a very low 13 / high 12 with slicks. But torque steering lane to lane in a straight line is only so fun. My RWD rally venture is on hold and i kinda aquired this car.

So im probably going to get Pete to come out and take a gander to get the car to be at least manageable for the day. But getting to the point here. Has the older turbo dodges had any success in a true rally enviroment? Its a direct competitor with the Golf / Rabbit.

Got my ass kicked every event this rallyx season by a turbo omni. When it held together that is. 3 DNFs for the season I believe.

No it's absolute junk - give it to us.....DID THE OMNI'S HAVE ANY SUCCESS IN A REAL RALLY ENVIRONMENT???!!!??? HOLY COW MAN, DON'T YOU KNOW???!!!!??

Dude, these were the most ubiquitous and successful, economical US rally cars in the 80's! They took over when the Datsun 510's faded out! They were the most likely car to win any divisional rally in that era. Your GLH was the car to try to keep up with, and the turbo Shadows carried on, albeit in lesser numbers. Doug Shepherd and the Krowlikowskis were constantly top competitors in this car family; Mark Utecht in MN was hot when he had his GLH. And with newer suspesion being a lot cheaper and more readly available, it can only be better.

You have winning historic rally classic on your hands! Look here:
http://www.rallywv.com/Rallywv-archive.htm
(Make sure you end up on the "Stone Agge Rallying" page.)
Look at the pix in the 3rd, 7th and 8th rows and you will find pix of a part of the small army of Omni's that swarmed to US rallies. In the 8th row, there is one picture showing the cars before the start of the '87 Lac Vieux Desert rally; note that the GLH OMNI has been issued car number ONE in the start order; get the idea??

Did you buy Eric Adams's Omni?

Boost, welded diff, and good tires made that thing haul, detonating like a machine gun and blowing the dipstick out despite having it hoseclamped in place...

Good times!

Do you still have any 4.44 gearsets left? I'm going with a bigger engine and won't need the 4.78s anymore.

sorry pete i sold off the 4.44 i had. BUT the junkyard near got another mazda truck the desired front diff in it!

Actually i bought the omni off a guy on the Ohiorotaries (actually ohiodrifting) over the summer. So its fresh. As for the whole motor thing. I know people wise in the ways of making power out of the motor WITHOUT it shitcanning. Actually doing things the right way is not the best way lol...

Hmm...we need to play....Ill supply the ghetto tea.

Mark, I was thinking the exact same thing! Low Impedance must be a youngster. Let me explain it in terms you can relate to. The Dodge Omni/Charger was the Subaru Impreza of it's day. Dodge had a very healthy contingency program and parts support back in the mid to late '80's. Doug Shepherd was consistently 4th or 5th overall in National events in Production and PGT Dodges behind Buffum, Millen, Woodner (Google those names, learn some history). As late as 2002 I finished 3rd overall in my Omni turbo at a very muddy rallysprint beating out many AWD Subarus. So yeah, they are cheap, fun, and still competitive. If you want any technical advice let me know. I know how to make these cars strong and fast. You don't need to go crazy on the motor. Too much power and you'll just be busting driveshafts left and right. All mine had was a 2.5 and a Mopar Performance high boost ECU. Plenty of power and gobs of torque. Just ask JVL.

An intercooler would have probably helped the detonation problem.

Dave Clark's Omni made colorful memories.

Search around and you will find the pic that got me in such trouble with Dave at the awards banquet after the ORV Park event in 2001 or so.

I wuz a bad boy and broke-it. Watch out for them weenie axles that will break off in the trans. I broke two of 'em at the same time.

You prolly have not heard what a savage I once was.

Bwahahahahaha!!!

You can make a set of axles of of later body models axles that are beefy. Alot of the fast 1/4 mile guess to do it.

And im running the TII setup which is intercooled and uses much better fuel and timing controls.

Pete call me! You have my number and i have no idea what yours is....stalker

If you look in the top left of this page and press reload till car 15 shows up you can see how Mr. Lane got some air in Dave's Omni.
