Cageless and/or open cockpit hill climb racers-really big balls or just no sesos?

So I've been thinking about some of the rallyanarchist's plans here -that is their plans to use the same car to stage rally, hillclimb, and crapcan race, and it seems like a good idea.

I've only done the dust-o-cross thing so far, with a couple classless autox's and while it beats sitting on the couch(or working),of course its kinda meh.

Track days are a possibilty, but the idea of hill climbs interests me much more.
Trouble is, SoCal- while having some amazing roads that would be awesome for a hill climb, apparently has like 1 hill climb for 4 cylinder model t's....that's it.

You have to hit Nevada or the Northern border to get to a hill climb.
Anyway..I did a little 'net search and a nice little 2.2 mile hill climb in a town called Hoopa up north looks like it might be a good 1st event.

I ain't gonna lie..the fact cages aren't required for all the classes was appealing to me..as my rallyx car isn't caged...but I realize this obviously isn't the safest idea...

Recently found one of my faster Mod Class SCCA rallyx cohorts decided to show up in his Mod class uncaged BMW 325 and run Hoopa-here's his run:

Found this Vid today of the same weekend and really opened my eyes up to how little protection one has in a lotus clone..even before his off I was looking at those trees going by and thinking"boy is he fucked if he goes into them...

Guy had a bar but no cage yet..talk about lucky just plopping into some bushes...

What do you guys think-would you run this hill in an uncaged car like that BMW?

How 'bout in that LoCost with just the Roll bar?

Seems like most hillclimbs around here are based on Solo I rules, which typically require a cage, or a roll bar.

I don't think it would be a big deal to run without a cage. Usually are pretty safe courses, lots of hay bales, etc. relatively low speeds.

I'd just try to not crash.

Ha!

Yeah I'm pretty sure the guy in the LoCost was trying not to crash..just not trying hard enough.

One probably has to go back and look at your goals/purpose. If the goal is to drive your car past speed limits and have a little fun at 6/10th's, there's probably nothing wrong with it. But if one is really going out and racing against the clock, then that is a different requirment all together.

I've run with no cage and would again. Run it at 70% and enjoy it for what it is. A weekend in the woods drinking beer and driving cars. Not a place to learn how to set records, but a place to get your feet wet.

Yeah nice little "novice" flyer I found for this event...

Go and have fun. There have been some serious injuries at hill climbs but people die in bed every day at home. Generally there is no medical insurance for competitors or workers so make sure your Obamacare is paid up.

i know a few guys who do that hill climb. one has a bunch of records..

looks fun. I don't know why, but i really hate seeing people drive with the "shifty hands" method I find it almost hard to watch.

looks fun, i keep wanting to run that hill climb but usually have some conflicting event, or this last year i've been trying not to travel / spend much money.

I use shifting hands method. I feel like you have to in a rally car because you need to be able to make surprisingly big hacks at the steering wheel (watch steering wheel on in-car gravel rallies), even after you've given a fair bit of steering.

It'd suck to need to turn more and not be able to.
