i still have the merkur.... but i am not turning it into a rally rat just yet. i street tuned it on the stinger pimp/mega squirt ecu. running stock turbo garrett, 3" exhaust, fmic saab 9000, mbc 15psi, and a cone filter vam delete.

i picked up a honda del sol i plan to do some fwd light class events. i found out through some reading i have to ear/gain exp with rally and start in a lower class. so it looks like this fwd class will have to do it for now.

i was planning on running some suspension in this del sol too. i hear the front ek 2000 civic bilstein 46mm and the rear eg 95 civic bilstein 46mm work out great. 12" long springs

but i hear you need to remove the strut spacer? and revalve it for my spring rates? if you can help with that i would appreciate it. if you can do it in house lmk.

do you have any cool honduh parts? any welded diffs?

Or run anything if you're thinking of grass-o-cross...

Del Sol is NOT a car for rally.

why is the del sol such a bad rally car?

i want to do some mid 2015 stage rally events. i might do some rally cross but i am over that now. i need to prep a car for stage rally.

i figure a honda fwd chassis is a cheap start.

The DelSol in particular has a problem being a Targa top car with a fiberglass panel I believe...not allowed. Beyond that JV will give you all sorts of grief of his views, keep in mind opinions are like assholes, everyone has one...

The factory targa top is metal on the del sol... is that a problem passing inspection?

I heard of people rally racing del sols, rx7s, mr2s and other cars with t tops or tara top porsches....

Someone else said the targa top del sol might be a problem too.

Please lmk if you think it will have tech inspecion issues.

not all rx7's, mr2's and porsche's have targa tops so you would have to look real close. The thing about the small cars is if you are on a transit, at some point you might want to drive around w/o a helmet on, but you can't do that unless your codriver likes having them in their lap. once a modern cage goes in there is very little room to operate.

there was somebody running a 4wd-converted del slo around the southwest, so it can be done.

I (obviously) don't think honduh fwd is a terrible platform - I'd just lean towards the longer wheelbase cars (all the double wishbone hatches are 100-102"winking smiley, rather than the 90-93" CRX/Del Slo.

Looks like he welded in a panel for the roof.

Save the effort, buy a car with a longer wheelbase and more room inside.

If it is metal and welded in and tech approved then you are good to go, I would check with whomever is in charge where you will be competing to get their input BEFORE you build.

I wouldn't allow one that was just bolted in like we do on metal sunroofs, but properly welded and caged I would be ok. Easier to build a Civic or CRX tho. and much better room inside.

No room in the Del Sol. poor size compared to the other car you have.... Weak sheel, weak rear suspension---compared to the other car you have..
You aren't that far from a friend out there..Friendlier than fawk, fast enough in his day to win National Group 2 rounds---except when pesky old Saabs were around, and talk to him:

Kurt Thiel

Thiel's Import Auto Service
14 Saltonstall St
Canandaigua, NY 14424 -

Maybe he'll sell you his old trusty Golf all log booked and going..because for him, the coin finally dropped---soon as he finds a rust free one, he's going 2300 SOHC 8v RWD...kinda like his brothers did 30 years ago...But better because time has marched on and we know how to make them better--and now we have the parts.
Simple, sturdy, bigger car, bigger motor, easier, cheaper RALLY-worth parts.

How much is his car worth? I cant spend that much $$. I will give him a call or email him.

Finding a already built car is what i want. But they are all too far away to make it worth buyib
ng.

If anyone you know races at any local events lmk. If they bring a old car i can bring some cash.

He is about 4hrs away from my house.

Cost of a race car is a tricky thing. You can buy a cheap shell, spend a ton on it, lots of time building it, lots of time later making it right and you need top consider the end cost when done. Figuring out that actual cost in order to compare it to a ready to go (or nearly ready) car is sometimes deceptive. It is all expensive and you need to make wise morally responsible decisions (buy Volvo, buy JVAB ).
