COLD WEATHER GRAVEL TIRE COMPOUNDS?
November 12, 2007 12:07PM
All other things being equal, which brand makes a "soft" compound gravel tire that might be better for cold weather (20-40 degrees F) gravel, if you had to choose between Michelin's 70 and Hankook's g70 compounds?

Or is there something else (that is obtainable) which is better?

Thanks!

So you think it'll just be cold for Pines Eh?

I'm banking on using Hankook G71's... mounted backwards :-)

With Hankook G70's as backups.
Yokohama guardex as my ice tires.
Some older yokohama somemdammed number I can't remember for snow and ice.
And then some S1 pirelli deep snow thingies in case there's bucket loads!
I'll mount and bring every tire I have... except pavement tires!

I guess the big question is whether we'll be using gravel tires at all!
Thanks!

So if we're running snow tires instead...

Should I be spending $15/ea on tubes for my snow tires?

Yes put tubes in your snow tires.

Will we need to use them? Who knows... only time will tell, but leaving them at home would be a bad choice!

My guess, Saturday morning it will be a toss up between something that can handle ice and will not disintegrate on the hard mostly frozen gravel surface, and a soft gravel. After that it will be soft gravels all the way. If it's like this it's a repeat of last year. The year before it was A034's all the way...

I can't wait!

-Martin.

hahaha all this talk of gravel tires for pines. I'd be thinking how many different types of snow and ice tires I could mount!!!
Funny thing is winter tires are pretty darned good on gravel. Gravel tires on that ONE patch of ice in the shady corner: not so much.
