We hear people lamenting the downward spiral in entry numbers at events in North America mixed with concerns about the costs of events spiraling upwards out of control. As someone wanting to get into the sport, this concerns me.
But, I'm the kind of guy that looks into things, and I think all is not as it seems. Western Canadian events seem to be bucking the trend in a big way, with record high entry levels and lots of 'production' cars on the start lists. (something else that is widely suggested to be 'stupid.') It seems that the Western Canadian events are pulling near double the entries of Eastern Canadian Regionals, so it can't be a North/South thing. From what I can tell in the regulations, western events are two-day events with one day for recce and making notes, where the eastern regional events tend to be one-day, with provided notes... so 'cheaper and easier.' what gives? |

How many new cars are there in BC resident BCers?
How many new cars in Saskatchewan? Links to start lists? It is certainly dying down here in the Unexplored Southern Area.. Of course that is a relative thing...one needs a time line.. relative to 1984-1985-1986, yes nearly dead.. This state had 7-8 rallys and a sprint and a WRC event... Us Population then was 235 million.. Now: 1 event Population is now 315million ---30% more people, less participants, less events.. People are too busy hooning, pretending, and burying themselves in loans to go do actual racing. Locally focused bodies are hard at work and where they exist the sport seems to be rebounding. Organizing is more work than ever and still requires massive volunteer efforts that many aren't willing to commit to.
People say things like, I won't do that event because they don't have recce orsuch lame comments. Grant Hughes |

RE the east west divide...
I'm sure economy plays into it... Alberta currently has the highest "average disposable income", Sask isn't far behind. BC is lagging a bit for the west. http://www.conferenceboard.ca/hcp/provincial/economy/income-per-capita.aspx http://www.statcan.gc.ca/tables-tableaux/sum-som/l01/cst01/labr79-eng.htm Apperently Quebec and Ontario is not keeping up with inflation. Means less money to play. There is still lot's of rallies in Ontario and Quebec though... you could do nearly 2 a month from May to Nov. I'd say from an "outsiders" perspective the east is doing okay. Probably the language barrier means lots of folks don't know about Quebec rallies... But hey the Quebec regionals are capped at $500 per rally... For rallies like BDC, you get to run a "national length" rally for that! http://www.couperallye.com/fr/ Rules... http://www.couperallye.com/images/2015/Reglement%20CRQ%202015%2020141116%20V1.pdf I know Lanark is looking for more entries though! Amazing rally (I co-drove it last year). |

So Alberta's luck of having oil AND high world oil prices is maybe why there's some rise in the GNP or GPP.. Wasn't that clever of them? They must be just lovin' Harper to death.. That's what I've heard from folks up there...There's always a lag but maybe that---and the 73% growth in the population might explain the little upswing in entries.. As for Harper, I am puzzled how there was ever enough people to vote that fool and his party in..I always thought Canada in general was more smrater-er than us---on average---but "you' did... I heard something like 8 rallies a year in Quebec... could that be too many to choose from? At what point are rallies no longer viable? http://rallywest.com/standings/2014/wcrc/overall 58 entered at least one - 127 entries in all. http://www.rallysport.on.ca/index.php?fuseaction=site.details&id=741 38 entered at least one 93 entries in all Qweebec ... looks like 50 entered at least one. 112 entries in all.. Our parlimentary system has it's ummm pluses and minuses. Not half of us voted for his party... but he still has more seats in the house. |
