A few pictures from South Australia..
August 18, 2015 07:57PM
Hello to All,
Just thought I'd share a few pics of my Volvo 242 Gt rally car . I compete in the South Australian Rally Championship , and also do a few rounds each year of the Australian Rally Championship.
We're just in it for fun , but have had some success along the way with this car .

Have just fitted a new front suspension courtesy of Mr J Vanlandingham ..........and have transformed the car .

Waiting now for some revalved shocks for the rear from John , and we'll be hitting the jumps flat out !

Here is a link to some stories & pictures : http://i1.wp.com/anygivenreason.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Walky_100_2015-51.jpg

drool.

and may i say, the striping looks vaguely reminiscent of the classy-as-all-hell MFP cars. but i may just turn everything into mad max.

kick ass 242.

Thanks Rob,

We've had a good run so far ...a 2nd & a 3rd in two rounds of the Australian Rally championship Classics ( our first events.) last year .

This year we've only had two events so far , both State events , & we've got a 1st , and a 2nd in class.

Next event is a national round in October.

We're in it to have fun & our only expectation is to enjoy ourselves & drive the car back onto the trailer at the end of the event . I'm still learning the car & its not fully developed yet - I'm waiting to hear back from JVP re rear shocks , but having a ball.
People my age have an opinion of Volvo's here , but the younger ones seem to think they're really cool ............which ,of course, I agree with .smiling smiley

Are you building a 240 , or have one ?

That's pretty cool, What is the class like over there? What sort of cars do you run against?

I have a 240 that I mess around with but hasn't gotten too far, just a couple Rally cross (not that kind) wins.

What do you run for a trans in that?

It varies a lot as to what other cars , datsun 1600, toyota celica, ford escorts.
There is a rally in November called the Alpine Rally which is for classic cars only . Currently they have 220 registrations for 110 starting places - its the biggest rally in Australia.

http://alpinerally.org.au

If you go to that website there's gallery of past events, or their facebook page 'Alpine Rally of East Gippsland"

Paul , its got a std volvo axle with a 4.54 Detroit Torsen Locker LSD from Summit Racing.
Std rear end layout except has Kaplhenke trailing arms & panhard rod . Sperical bearings replace all rubber bushes, including the big main bush . HD bilstein shocks and std 244 springs (softer than origional 242 gt springs).

I'm waiting to hear back from John V. to get upgraded rear shocks.

Front suspension struts are from John Vanlandingham .

Is John away somewhere ? , I'm waiting to hear from him .

Gearbox is World Class Tremec T5 , with Deeworks adaptor kit & clutch plate. Clutchnet clutch.
I need to replace the std 0.6? 5th gear with 0.8? , its too tall to be much use as it is. The other ratios are ok , and its a strong box. New price here was cheaper than recon celica box.
Needed to fabricate a new crossmember to fit the tremec , which also serves as the sump guard support. Sump guard extends to the end of the gearbox , everything is protected.

Engine is B230 block , 405 head ( port/polish,larger valves) shaved a bit to get compression ratio up a bit ( 10.5 I think), Grp A cam, forged pistons /rods , all balanced. Flywheel lighened by a couple of kgs, twin weber 45 dcoe . MSD ignition & coil. Exhaust is stainless steel headers etc.
Standard cooling sytem in std fan .

I've got the original engine in the shed , its a B23e with the good cam ( can't remember which one it is , but std for the B23e in the GT). I bought the other bits second hand ( B230 & pistons etc , hot head) for a good price & had it all assembled professionally.

It's not super powerful but its really torquey , and it all happens between 3500 - 6000 rpm so no need to rev it too hard and so hopefully it will last a long time.

But , most importantly it sounds great !
