A bit off topic. My diesel sounds like death... help
August 18, 2015 11:25PM
So this is my 1987 mercedes turbo diesel, om603 is the engine code. Car started making the noises only after freeway drives, but now its all the time. I changed the lifters, no change in noise. Cracked each injector, idle drops, but no change in noise. Thoughts?

Nice turbo!!
Injector pump sounds a little tikky.....the deeper noise sounds like cummins diesel.

Waterpump or other driven accessory bearing, something spinning way faster than the motor. Starter be six possibly not disengaging.

Replaced the belt tensioner and damper, intake manifold gasket, and glow plugs. Starts nicer but sounds worse somehow.

Definitely one of the accessories, plain to hear that it's faster than crank speed so not in the engine. New tensioner is a bit stronger pulling a little harder on whatever is piling up. Water pump, idler, alternator.

Yeah you never really said what noise in particular. I hear what sounds like a giant exhaust leak, normal injection noise and what sounds like an accessory noise since its faster than the engine speed. If you don't have a noisy exhaust maybe you have a stuck intake valve and its blowing back into the intake.

A friend had an intake lifter pump up enough that it would not bleed down on a rebuilt engine. Verified which cylinder it was by running the engine without the intake manifold on and seeing which one spit back out the port. That was pretty neat to watch!
As far as the noise in the videos, sounds like an exhaust leak. That's all I got.

Next time ill use my best Morgan Freeman to narrate. That said i believe it to be the number 2 injector. I cracked it wide open and the noise stopped.

Obnoxious loud noise goes away when you remove the fuel? I would do a quick compression check on that hole. If it's clanking and clattering, you might have other issues.
Pop testing the injector will at least let you know if the injector is firing too early or dribbling fuel.
I have a ghetto diesel injector test rig. You can send the injector my way if you can't find anyone down there to do it cheap.
