Or 1/4 that since aside from a cage and suspension--under $5500--there is nothing to do to a BMW--according to the experts. The only big nut to crack is getting a car made to do 2 things--putter in low, and go REAL high speed---instead be really quick in the middle range--25 to 90mph (and not break oil pumps, and drop valves 3x cause the valve locks leave the valve loose and unstable, and the lower shock mounts shear off constantly and the stub shafts rattle to death) The stuff people have run them have repeatedly encountered... Not possible, Golves are terrible horrible junk compared to all of those other cars. ____________________________________________________________- One. Class -- 2WD www.quantumrallysport.com http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Quantum-Rally-Sport/281129179600?ref=nf |

Oh I don't know. I'd choose a Golf before a E36 M3.. For just the cost of a damaged E36 M3 you could but a complete proper gearbox for a Golf...With a Lego-ed together 2,0 16v and a good box, then a Golf might be good enough to occasionally beat a '69 Saab V4 if its a mild one like Garth's. The Golf has a 2.slow bottom end, an 8v head, and CIS injection last time I checked. It is a VERY simple car that is VERY well put together.
The Xratty is less than the SP Subaru, including the new engine upgrade. It's also raced for 3 (?) seasons with the only major issue being blown up 2.3 motors and turbos, and the occasional wheel falling of (cough cough). I have no clue what's been done on the BMW besides better brakes and suspension. So if you want a quick SIMPLE car.... build a VW golf ?! My plans for 2016: Possibly, maybe, get the stupid 16v golf on stage... maybe. It's been neglected for too long. Gobright! We should have a race to see who can get their VW projects on stage first. I'm feeling a little bit zesty. You in for it? |

That's a bit unfair Grant. I'd suggest that John's 2016 plans are the same as his 2015 plans which are the same as his 2010 plans, which are the same as his 2005 plans, and so-on. I'd guess his plans are to promote rallying with simple platforms that he knows to be cheap, reliable, and sustainable over the long term. |

Let's see, we did approximately 22 hours of competitive track racing before head gasket failure on 190k mile engine, at which time we bought a whole running car for $500 and grabbed engine, gearbox, and the LSD out of it, swapped engine and LSD into the track car and did two hill climbs in it then drove it home and parked it in my garage until next season. I have under $6k total into this car. All the "issues" John talks about on BMWs are either known issues with early engines (valve retainers) of which there is an easy and cheap fix (weld on oil pump nut, replace with newer metalurgy retainers), wear items which EVERY car has (check axle stub shafts regularly) or design issues that you would think a garage suspension expert would be more interested in the solution than talking shit on them. Regardless the fact remains, the majority of interested people want to rally a Subaru. Our customer base is easily 90% Subaru. Grant Hughes |

its funny though all of these discussions on cars there is never a talk about matching a car to a driver...
Are you a conservative guy who likes going hammer down when all feels right? Go for a high horsepower car over stoutness Are you a balls to the walls, must drive foot to the floor at all times? Build a tank of a car and go light on the motor Somewhere in between... open light The thing is we call come from different backgrounds with different driving styles. Through crashes, preparation styles, age of equipment, the anal retentiveness of your crew and the depth of your wallet there are so many variables that can hinder you from placing well in a rally. Hell i have a barely warmed over TDI with Hotbits and I drove my first rally sprint like a pansy.. i got second* thanks to crashes and failures. My buddy who has a cam'ed 2.0 Golf with a diff and some Shine Racing springs on bilstein HD's won... he's firmly in the first group *a post awards protest resulting in a classing change put me in third "officially" |

Well, now that I am a home owner, I don't have the "I'm saving for a house" excuse. Now it's a matter of getting my motivation back to working on a car in the garage when I've done just about fuck all to my own car over the past couple years.
For 2016, I'd like to run Sno*Drift, but the wife isn't a fan of the cold weather. I promised Mary that 100AW was fast roads and last we ran we had that 6 inches of slurpee slush fall down. So I think a 2016 100AW would be a good redemption. After that, there's rally car #2 that I need to rebuild the motor after I broke it on a track day (snapped the timing belt) the first time I drove it in anger. I'm guessing I'll want some cheaper and closer events. So that leaves STPR for a national event or running smaller events like Magnum Opus or Summer Sno*Drift. On a side note, I'd love if there were some actual hard top honda RWD out there. S2000 motors are dirt cheap since kids love crashing theirs trying their best Tokyo Drift impressions. Can't complain about a 2.0L that makes 240hp@9k or a 2.2L that makes the same 240@8k. It seems the cheapest way to get a straight cut dogbox is raiding circle track parts bins. BMW really seem the only non-vintage models that are up to the task, but like John said, cost to repair them and maintain them is more expensive than a VW, Ford or Honda.
I'd be happy to run that. Never ran RWV, it was supposed to be my first rally back in 2008 but I skipped it over running LSPR instead. I'd probably replace NEFR with STPR, Magnum Opus, Summer S*D for local.
S*D isn't bad in 2WD as long as you have proper tires. I've ran non-tractionized tires several years and it can get sketchy, I need to run some proper tractionized tires one of these years. I love the event, lots of a sliding, but you'll likely get in a snow bank at least once over the weekend.

You agreeing with something John said? My VW TDI that I've average 5k miles per year since owning costs me more in repairs per year than the total cost of the most expensive BMW I've bought. So far I'm at 1000, 1100, 500, 1100, 500 and 175 in purchase price for the six I've bought. The two cheapest were good drivetrain cars that I bought JUST for the engine, transmission, differential, and spare parts. I offered a friend and customer that's been on the fence about rallying a BMW or a Subaru the opportunity to perform labor on the engine swap and help with other needed labor to build the Compact using 2.8L drivetrain from the $175 328i in exchange for driving the car in our local hill climb series in 2016. I'm going to stick to driving the Goose up until the Lands End Hill Climb then get it back into Chump form for the COTA event and then it will likely become a more dedicated traditional road race car for 2017 and I'll move into the Compact. You're right on the VW. Part of the reason I went to a Honda to get ease of parts/price.
I still want to go from FWD to RWD eventually. BMW is probably the best bang for the buck you can get for OEM motors and power with our current rulesets. Six cyl BMW, and larger displacement Four Cyl will still be O2WH in NASA because they still have the 4 valves/cyl adjustment last I checked (much like a 2.5 2wd subaru is O2WH). Ideally, I'd like to stick with G2 for RA, I don't feel like running G5 for the sake of G5 and not having any competition. I always forget about mustangs, mainly due to the live axle, but you can get Cobra R rear end swaps on them. Depending on what you want there are pretty good V6 options on modern motors to get 300HP which is plenty for RWD. Could even have potential of Ecoboost options if you want to do a 4cyl turbo option and want to deal with the fab work. The new models are just too heavy IMO. |

Update. It was a slow start since my job is 100% commission based but I'm getting the hang of this shit who knows maybe I'll finally be able to afford a volvo to hit the stages (or cones or sumpthin).
Even if this dosen't work out that well I took my GED and I'm pretty sure I aced it so my resume will be stacked like a motherfucka. I guess we'll find out how years of Gran Turismo, RBR, and 2 whole hours of indoor karting seat time translate into rally cars. I suggest you leave your AWD subie home this year. |
