Shared trailer ownership
January 11, 2016 03:12PM
I'm considering splitting the cost of a trailer with another dude. (non rally guy. He has a small local auto shop and wants to be able to haul the occasional car) I've heard lots of horror stories regarding shared ownership. Anyone done it successfully?

You should absolutely share a trailer.

With UHaul.

Better yet!

Flat tow... then rent a trailer once you've had an off...

My rally tow rig hangs on the wall between rallies...

Local rental/radiator shop has been hooking me up with trailers at 50$ a weekend in exchange for the sticker in the rear window.

Shared trailer wants 400$ and the trailer has to 500lbs lighter than the rental jobbies. Borrowed it this last weekend and it's in fairly reasonable shape, and I dont have to store it in my driveway.

I'd stick to the $50 plan. Even with long term good friends, shared items get weird when something changes and one of you has to pay up or whatever.

My version of the shared plan with buddies works by trading access to stuff we already own. Like, you can come over and use the TIG anytime you want and I can take your trailer whenever I need it. Or, I'll repack the bearings and keep the lights working on that thing if I can use it. Or, I'll have my kids attack your trailer with rustoleum and brushes if I can treat it like mine on rally weekends.

Through these sorts of deals I have access to pretty much any size trailer at any time now and at a variety of locations.thumbs up

Mine got stolen while stored at a shop. They got to use it for free, I got a place to keep it.

I'd recommend against it other than if it's your only option, based on my experience. Before it was stolen a light got busted on it too under someone else's watch, which didn't matter once taken.

U Haul won't rent me a trailer.
Someone was saying Enterprise Commercial is under $100 a day with unlimited mileage for a nice truck. Add trailer and under $150 a day.

I know U-Haul still refuses to rent trailers to pre-2011 Ford Explorers. It doesn't matter if you book online or not.

I'll buy a 2 car trailer, you buy the tow rig. Now to come up with a catchy race team name....

If you were both running for the same championship, the race team name could be:

Two Racers, One Cup!

THAT one would be a fun one to explain to a Volvo driving soccer mom at Parc Expose!

EEESH Grant that seems steep to me. Uhaul will black list anyone for having a spat with the customer service agent, or generically doing something the staff doesn't like. Surprisingly easy to get on the uhaul blacklist or so I'm told.

lets see, two audis, and a trailer towed by a minivan.... Unreliable Racing.
