Is that a failure in the tube? In a completely straight line?

Whatever it is, that's a scary one...

That's where the impact with the tree was. I'd expect the tube to bend like that.

I think it is less the bend than the gaping hole - in a straight line - in the front tube.

I have little doubt Hurst has had a good look at the damage... but wouldn't expect any sort of formal 'report' on it. I strongly suspect the sanctioning bodies simply don't have the funding to do proper investigations and reports.

yeah Keith, exactly my point...

I do wood, not steel, but that is not a typical failure for "tubing " being bent... whatever it's made of.

Slightly warmed over 4AG, dual Webers, Ford t9, some JVABs from a Corolla, 4-link with a panhard bar, really nice brakes. It is extremely light too.

That's likely the end of the weld where it finally failed and just happened to be the right impact to tear it nice and clean and straight.

Grant,

with all due respect to the incident involved... if the interpretation of the picture is that the front tube actually sheared where the pic seems to indicate, that is a bizarre failure.

one would expect buckling forces to crumple the front of the tube, leaving the "back side" or tension side intact (as the "a pillar bar" shows).

i suspect your are correct mentioning the weld, but that implies a big stress riser at that point... probably something to consider for design no? gusset? big rubber shock absorber? just play video games? winking smiley

We lost the throttle connection in the Jetta on the first stage. Managed to get the first triangle down before the next car on stage (30 sec intervals at PIR). Andy spent ten min upside down in the car with me handing him tools. We thought we had it fixed, and I picked up the triangles, only to have to put them all back out.

Coolant out of the relief valve on the first stage came in the cabin until we got the radiator fan on high and that went away. Running out of gas on the last stage, had a lot of fuel cutting and fuel pump cavitation and lost a lot of time, 2min ish. Ran out of gas on transit after, got towed into a gas station by another competitor and managed to make our in min for the MTC. Would have likely been 3rd in G2 without the fuel problems on day 2.

Solid day on day three, except for a last min service fix with associated 10second service-out penalty. We got a flat on the last stage and drove on it for the last 3 miles, through the rough corners. We took second to Tim O'neil in G2, great stages and beautiful scenery.

Alla y'all: maybe save the analysis for times when you have more than just hearsay and a single blurry picture to go on?

Grant's welded more cages than you have. Neener neener... So managing to weld tubes together does indeed make him an expert on tube structure failure. He should work for FAA doing post crash analysis
It's logical..

Sounds like a blast! Who owns/ is driving it? Look forward to see how they do with it in the upcoming events.
