The off on SS1 for the fiesta seems to be beginner's luck in a shiny new car.

Andy Cowan and Andreas Bautista were FLYING in the VR6 Jetta and caught a car and were eating dust on the first stage, lost a whole minute compared to others, and were running as high as 2nd or 3rd overall and leading 2wd until an axle let go.

John Coyne went on to win overall, after trailing a bit at the start with supposed ball-joint issues.

That's all I know watching from afar but proud of Andy (My regular driver) for his speed at the weekend despite not finishing.

Wow, what a rally! I can't believe that after 1 hour and 47 minutes of racing we took the 2WD win by just three seconds over Chris Palermo. Fantastic racing.

We nearly threw it all away on one of the last corners! We had a 13 second lead going into the last stage, which was 15 miles long and in the dark. At the turn around we were chatting with Palermo and Fine and knew they were going to be pushing. Towards the end of the stage we were catching a lot of dust from the Subaru in front of us (we were 35 seconds faster than them on this stage), and at one of the very last corners we came up on a downhill right 4 much too hot. I drove off the side of the road, kept on the throttle, mowed down some scrub brush and miraculously managed to get back on the road. We were extremely lucky there was no berm there to tip the car over or we would have rolled for sure. It probably only cost us about five seconds. Damage was surprisingly minimal, we didn't even break a light.

The gearbox (8v VWMS ratios) was perfect on stage. Nearly touched redline in 5th on the fast downhill, and 1st gear was well matched for the hairpins. With the close ratios I was never out of the powerband. I could keep the revs above 5k the entire rally!

The transits were another story though. With the tall first gear I had a bear of a time pulling into time controls on steep uphill sections and soft surfaces. I almost missed our minute pulling in to ATC 3 because I couldn't get the car moving. I had to ride the clutch real bad, but we made it.

Part of that problem might be because I retarded the cam timing 2 deg in order to improve the power band at the top end. But it kills the low end. I plan to set it back to 0 or even +2 deg before Frazier Mountain (in less than 2 weeks!), which will have a lot of uphill.

Sounds like you're one more convert to the "get a real gawddam gearbox" brigade.. Soundfs like it was a lot of fun...
Everything else worked good?
You have a decent oil cooler? Now that you can keep the motor buzzing along that might be the next thing to think of..Or maybe oil temp gauge first and then yikes!!! Oil cooler once you see what oil temp is like.
Suspension still boing-ing like its supposed to?

Don't use that. It doesn't set up the cookies properly and ColdFusion barfs.

Use http://www.rallydata.com/sessionredirect/rallyresults_entrypoint.cfm?weekendid=63 instead.
