Are Navigators supposed to tell you to go faster?
July 05, 2018 08:21AM
I recall seeing an in car video of a certain Co-Driver yelling at his less experienced female driver to go faster, and I am wondering if that is common/accepted? Rubbed me the wrong way for sure but I don't know what their arrangement was.

Having said that, I understand the goal is to go as fast as you can, but .....

If a coodriver is more experienced and can get the car going faster with some prodding why not? I average 1 rally a year. I'd love a coodriver that knows his shit to tell me to keep it pinned.

Usually the answer is no. It really depends on the team and what their game plan is though.

Too many variables and unknowns to answer the question.

I'd say it would be neither common nor unheard of.

I've certainly had drivers I've had to urge to drive quicker and certainly some pace note language may come across that way.

As a rule I'd say co-drivers would more often be calming influences.

But if co-drivers don't tell people to driver faster and driver BETTER---who will?
Ours is not a shame culture, so that doesn't work.

Depends but sometimes and as a team gets experienced it should definitely be the case.
Check out from about 2 minute mark on this. We'd been discussing where time was to be had and where I was taking it too easy.

I ran the last hill climb I did without a codriver for the mental challenge but also I felt that having one with me was actually slowing me down due to the distraction of chatter.

Where is the video you speak of?

35 or so years ago I "Cracked The Whip".." Shift! Shift into 4th!" a few time as we were in 3rd on a couple of long ass straights at Red Line and saw zero effort to move the gear lever into into 4th.
At the end of the stage I said something like," I wasn't telling you how to drive". I was.My driver said he was playing it safe but, "Appreciated My Enthusiasm to Do Well,"or somthing along those lines...

I was shown the video some 15+years ago, it wasn't public, and I don't want to name the codriver or driver in this case.

I don't know what these guys are talking about, they need to shut the fuck up right now.

99,9% of people on North America need to drive waaaaaaay faster : FACT

Anybody who disagree with this statement should go knit or do pilates.

Are you offering a class? Though knitting seems useless. I would like to learn to properly operate a sewing machine so I can get another month out of my jean shorts each summer.

I was just recently thinking about this because I caught myself telling my 16 year old to "speed up!". She was driving so slow that others were starting to look desperately for places to get around her.

I think it's appropriate in a lot of cases but as others have said it depends on the situation and people.

When spectating the rallies I've been to, from about the third or fourth car back you start to hear spectators telling people to speed up.. we could probably use more of that in some cars.

In the moto world you'll here "ride your own ride" which means don't get in over your head. But if the driver seemed under their normal comfortable level I'd tell them to get moving.
