Question: is it even possible that a gearbox failure caused the car to lurch into the corner? I watched the video, looks like a cut inside.

I think it could. If the thing fails and goes into neutral your line is going to change.

I could see him going wide as he loses power, but to clip the inside? I don't know. He seems to be taking the low road and instead of owning it, he blames it on somebody else. I bet the gearbox guys are like "nope Ken, it wasn't us!"

Think about it this way...
The transmission dropping out of gear would be very much like lifting throttle to a 'zero load' condition in the driveline. Now, when you're in a steady state drift in a corner and you lift, you get weight transfer to the front of the car which will turn that end of the car in. (More drag on the front wheels because of more weight means front end turns in. This is fundamentally how LFB is used to adjust a line in the middle of a corner while staying on the gas.)

Now, the end effect may well be going off the outside of the corner, but the initial reaction will be the front end tucking. When you're running close to the edges... then something like what happened makes sense... at least to me.

Watching the video you do see the engine jump up to the redline just before clipping the rock...
