You might argue about the solution, but the message is a good one.
Good story about someone frustrated with running open class refocussing their efforts on 2wd and having more fun. https://carsrally.ca/crc-news/taking-2wd-by-storm-wim-van-der-poel-and-bryan-lord/?fbclid=IwAR3-TTCa8Ws7CGi7729qKpqCycHOIxxXkHfRRuMR53zvAs77aYLdJq9UsGA First Rally attended (2000), First Rally competed in (2001) Cars Built (1), Engines Built (0) Cages Built (0) Driver (8), Co-Driver (47), Drivers (19) Clerk (29), Steward (1), Official (17), Volunteer (5) WRC Spectator (1), WRC Photographer (6), WRC Observer (4) Rallies attended (120) Countries attended rallies in (11) Last Updated, May30, 2022 |

Yup. He had a good season. Goes to show that CARS TV needs to give more than 2 minutes of 2WD coverage for the full season. Watch the video clip linked at the end of the article and you'll see Patrick Cyr (5 seconds worth anyhow) in the Toyota 86 showboating for the fans at Tall Pines.

2wd has been getting fairly good coverage in the broadcast shows when there is competition and a story to be told. Yes Open4wd gets the lion's share of coverage, but Open 2wd gets more love than Prod4wd, which has had some great battles. Decent story.....I noticed this..
“American Dave Clark showed up in a BMW M3 that he found much easier to drive than his Merkur.” Did he replace his XR with a BMW? Or just borrow a car for the race? ................................................. ..................... Support your Local North American Rally Forum!! Thanks for the update AJ.
Would be interesting to hear from the man himself if the BMWs are in general easier to drive than the XR’s. I’m wondering how the Volvo 240s would compare as well. ................................................. ..................... Support your Local North American Rally Forum!! They (Clark Rally Empire) purchased the ex-Hintz BMW M3 as a spare car, and for Dave to drive while the XR is getting worked on. Dave was amazed at how much faster and easier the m3 was to drive than the merkur. The M3 and the XR are within ~50lbs, but the M3 has more weight over the back tires. Dave still has the XR, it's been undergoing some major surgery. Something about improving rear grip and stability. There's been a constant issue with the xr bending rear arms, and even when aligned the car didn't have as much rear grip/stability as the m3. He'll probably bring it back out in the future. He's pretty happy with the m3 at the moment, except it "needs more power". Larry drives the ex-Nelson silver m3. |

I wonder if Dave is contemplating selling the XR? ................................................. ..................... Support your Local North American Rally Forum!! Wow that was a quick response... Rally anarchy responses these days are usually once a month if that. No I don’t have the funds for that. Not currently anyway. Last time the car was for sale I had the funds and thought about it. Kick myself for not buying it. But in reality I’m not ready for stage yet. Just did a career change and when I’m working money is way better than I’ve ever made. But I’m between jobs so don’t need to do anything stupid right now. But I’m hoping if the proper car is available for sale maybe later on this year or in 2020 I might pick something up -need to get some serious cash in the bank first. ................................................. ..................... No..87-88 they double skinned the subframe, the trailing arms mounting points on the subframes and substantially strengthened the trailing arms, and made them toe and camber adjustable. By 89 season they had homologated a simpler "square beam" (in both tarmac and gravel spec), cast magnesium trailing arms and an extruded/cast connecting piece as well as a spiffy diff mount (earlier being welded steel) They changed the angle of the arms from about 16* stock to 6* on the Group A cars.. So no the Group A cars didn't have the problem..That's as you asked the question.. On the Group N cars Ford sold strengthened parts with the 'cover name' they were "selected" standard parts..Total bullshit lies...I had a long talk with the RS Dealer who had the contract to develop Group N parts and techniques when he was closing down in 1997 (bought 3 ECUs and some other junk, fair prices)...He said they too stock arms and split thim down the weld pinch rail where the upper and lower stampings were welded, built tube chrome-moly more or less H shaped deal, welded in in , put the upper part on again and re-welded...... But geometry was as always in Group N , production.. This was the---in my opinion having seen the WRC cars in action in WRC----the best days of rally. 40mm restrictor in Group A meant the motors made about 392-395 hp and would rev--and still make power.... Group N was well supported and the super-bitchin Lancia, Sierra 4x4 Cosworths and the Misterbitchis with the Group N 38mm restrictor made a good 370hp and even though EVERYBODY cheated all to fuck in using "big tooth" gearboxes --but stock ratios and final drives---the cars could get into the top 12 in WRC events and better in national level.... And plenty of cars were driven far far harder and longer than anybody currently active in North America and I never heard anybody complaining about a lack of grip or odd handling and "needing" 6 degree beams....and some of the guys I spoke with --old friends who was ex-Swedish Champion and friends of him/business partner who was ex-world champion and multiple Swedish Champion were comfortable enough to talk openly... So if much faster drivers weren't complaining, there's a fair chance that a local guy --encouraged by immoral inexperienced nerd boys----have concluded they have a problem and "need to" spend several thousand dollars when its not really an issue...which couldn't be solved by driving more (and that, knowing where he lives and that he doesn't is one of the great unanswered puzzles in the world) John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember!
