WTB 95-01 Impreza 2DR - cheap and cheerful
February 07, 2008 04:43PM
Afternoon all!

Wasn't sure whether to put this in shit for sale section so stuck it here where it might see more traffic.

I'm looking for a 2DR Impreza so that would be 95-01. Any motor, OK condition is fine, but must be running. Cheap is good, but I've been looking UP to $5k. (Cheaper would be nicer though!)

Willing to travel to pick this up - might even do a fly in/drive home deal if it's nice.
Any links or pointers much appreciated.

Cheers,
Nick.

Denver area has more Subarus per capita than Japan. It seems like it anyhow.

I just bought a nice '97 Impreza Outback, 200k, well cared for, new tires, brakes, CD player, glove box full of receipts for $2000. It has a noisy input bearing...

I hope this isn't for a rally shell. I had to make quik release rear lexan rear windows for the one 2 door we have running outa the shop so as to be able to change out rear suspension quik fast-in a hurry at events. PITA and the 4 doors are lighter.

I agree with David. The four doors are nice to have access to behind the seats and strut top mounts.

Fuck me that's asking a lot for what we know is a flimsey piece of kaka waiting to spit the gearbox guts up if you drive with MODERATE VIGOR.

It still wouldn't be the hot deal were they 400 bucks not with the "sun baked hardened TURDS" for trannies.

What the fuck justifies those prices?

David, this is not going to be a rally car...yet. My current rally car debuting at Seed 9 is a 2 door, so this new one could become a donor anytime in the future. I agree the 4 door is more practical but the Coupe just looks cooler.
And as for side windows, I'm not too worried at the moment - don't have any spare boingers to change out yet! smiling smiley

Grant, thanks for the links. I MAY have found a really cheap 2.5RS in TX, or maybe a REALLY cheap L here in Cali.

And John, you are DAMN right. I can't believe people ask $4900 for a 100,000 LOW miles 13 year old Impreza!
I found some prick dealer asking $20,000 for a 2000 RS Coupe!!

Nick.

If you can wait, you can get deals. I've bought three and led three friends to three others all for under $1000. I always suffer from the greedy capitalist realization that I can buy them (all 3 times has been in January ironically), drive them for a month or two, then sell them for double what I paid. Though the current car I listed for double almost right away, but that's because it's FWD and auto. But with my current fucked up back I'm glad I'm not riding the scooter to and from work. Speaking of which, I need to find out if that guy still has the $250 Merkur. smiling smiley

Puking the tranny? Ummmm, not so much. I've owned and know directly of a total of probably two dozen RS's (friends' cars and forum members) and none have ever had tranny problems (these cars are N/A). You're probably thinking of the 2002-2003 WRXs which had glass trannies (I broke one of those).

Actually, the 2002-2003 "glass" trannies are quite a bit stronger than the earlier model 2.5RS trannies, particularly the phase 1 trannies. The gears are wider, especially first, and the synchros are better. Back in 2000 when Pat Richard was beating the unrestricted turbo DSMs with his 165hp 2.5RS on the to the PGT championship in the USA and Canada we could get about 4 rallies out of tranny before he broke something. I was going to make him a necklace out of all his broken 2nd gears to remind him to take it easy... Of course, with the WRX PGT car we had to rebuild the tranny before every rally.
It's just that at 165hp the tranny can handle it but add 100hp and it's overstressed.

The 2.5's also go through headgaskets like its going out of style. Not so much the older ones, though I have seen a few pre 02 go bad. But I've seen at least one 03 or 04 that had them replaced twice by 60k miles, both times under warranty. And I've done one or two million of them myself.

OK I can see that with Richard breaking them, it might appear that way, especially that often. But I have never heard of any breaking from abuses of autocrossing, rallycrossing, and even talking to PGT people out west with the 2000-2001 2.5RS who have run them for a couple of seasons.

And yes Carl, the headgaskets go all the time. Subaru is real good about warranty work on them though, even though it sucks.

Eli, sometime ask me why I retired my OBS from rallycrossing...

John, I think the reason the prices are so high is because on the whole *for normal driving* the cars are pretty reliable, and they're one of the few relatively cheap older AWD platforms. If you've just moved to Colorado or Utah or wherever and you're looking for an inexpensive snow car, it's pretty much the only choice unless you go with an SUV of some sort. The Honda system sucks, the system that Nissan put on that goofy boxy Sentra wasn't much better, and the Volvos, BMWs, and Audis were expensive.

Appear that way? Look, I've rebuilt lots of Subaru transmissions and I'm telling you the RS gears are smaller than the WRX gears. It's just that the RS gears are less stressed with lower HP and torque than the WRX, especially when people crank up the boost. Most people are easier on the tranny than Pat (most people are slower, too) and don't have a problem breaking them, even in early WRX's.
