Maybe as I previously mentioned, a number of theses car are unable to compete due to the current rules. And yes a lot of the people I have spoken to want to have fun without the BS of overly officious rules. Please see below.... Rule set. 1. There will be no protests, any attempt at a protest will result in exclusion from the class with any money paid into the prize pool being forfeited. 2. There will be no distinction between Open or Production classes. 3. There will be no distinction between Front wheel drive or Rear wheel drive. 4. There will be no distinction based on engine displacement or manufacturer. 5. Please refer to Rule 1. Yes, it's a Ranger. Xr4Ti, it is rwd and was made in Germany. |

The thing is that this is a grassroots, competitor driven initiative... so rather than anyone 'bringing' the formula out East, take the idea, reach out to others with eligible cars, and run with it yourselves? Sounds like type of event that I would like to attend. I would just pull my front driveshaft. Turbo cars allowed? Fairly straight forward rules, what's not like?
I hope you gain some traction with your endeavor. Would like to see more of this type of events being hosted. It could be a great way to get older cars back in the dirt. I would love to host something like in the mountain west but wouldn't have a clue how to go about it. How do you legally procure roadways to hold your event? Anyways, I can't wait to hear more about your progress on this. Mick |

No idea this place still existed....
Anyway, I am here to be a pooper. (1) There is virtually nothing about a 2017 Ford fiesta that is in any meaningful way different from a 1985 VW Golf. (2) I know of no one that won't show up to an event because they don't have a special class to play in that would be any more likely to show up just because they get a $10 trophy for being in an under-subscribed class. ____________________________________________________________- One. You are missing the whole point of this, the idea is to encourage people with older cars to bring them out to play. Lots of differences between those cars, about 200k miles to start with. In standard trim about 50 ho, in most cases 3k in suspension coat and maintenance, don't even get me started on the whole wiring issues. We have more AE86's signed up than are running in the whole of the US, a Mk1 Escort, Mk2 Escort at least one RX7, someone else is talking about resurrecting his Arrow. Yes, it's a Ranger. Matt, sorry to ruffle your feathers. I have 2 mk2 Golfs that would fit your category. Your arguments just don't match reality. A 1985 Golf can easily cost more than an R2 (and in similar spec, surely will cost more to build and more to maintain).
If you are suggesting a true vintage class with model & year correct parts throughout, even worse... That is the definition of a gentleman's class. If you are suggesting some crap-can derby, we already have it and that old Golf or Volvo is plenty competitive against any shiny R2 shelf-bought car when driven well. ____________________________________________________________- One. The reality is we have a TON of cars that would be eligible for this that simply aren't being brought out to events, and this has started people thinking about bringing the cars up to spec and entering events again. That can't be a bad thing, can it? The Fiesta is probably cheaper, if you know where to look. And parts a lot easier to find. |

Keith, the question is WHY they aren't coming out to events. Is it because:
I have a REALLY hard time believing that the first item on the list is what is holding someone back from entering events. Furthermore, my opinion is that if item number one is holding you back from entering events, you simply are not cut out for being a regular rally competitor period. Worse yet, adding yet another stupid 2wd class further dilutes the already incredibly thin competition. Every finisher would be top 3 in class. Also see signature below that I have been promoting since at least 2004 2wd only needs one class. It is naturally resistant to timid driving. It is naturally resistant to application of cubic dollars outside of 2 areas (tires and gear ratios) both of which are not addressed by the proposed class. It is naturally highly resistant to big HP advantages -- also not addressed by this proposal. A well-driven 150hp 1985 Golf with a stock gearbox and slightly improved final-drive can easily be placed in the top 10 overall at any event in the country. ____________________________________________________________- One. Someone else who has done a lot of events on both sides of the border (back when we could cross it) said they found that in general, Canadians were more 'serious' about competing and doing well as opposed to the American tendency to 'go play in the woods.' Of course that is generalizing, but I've noticed a lot of people stop rallying because they can't perform well in the class they are competing in. If this brings them out and is a reminder to just have fun with it... I think that is great... and maybe, just maybe, they'll get the seat time they need to be quciker as well. I beleive this to be a competitor driven initiative, much like Max Attack was... so not actually adding any classes. We presently have an historic class that people forget about, or don't enter because of the lack of competition in it. (Not fully sure why this would be different, but if the energy of someone promoting it works, I'll happily take the entries!) Out of curiosity, what was the last event you entered? NEFR 2016, 2 months before my daughter was born. First outing in the TDI and broke all the axles we brought with us. I have 2 Golfs sitting at the ready when the time is right (with much upgraded axles). They just require new belts. ____________________________________________________________- One.
