Pre 1990 2wd.
December 15, 2019 08:04PM
There is a discussion amongst some of us here in western Canada about resurrecting the old Group D class (or a variation there of) for at least 1 Western event during 2020.
The idea came about because of the number of pre '90 2wd cars just sitting not being run due to the current crop of 2wd inc R2's at the events.
We are thinking about allowing all 2wd cars with a model date prior to 1990 as a starting point, there would be no distinction between production or open and no displacement rules other than those in place by CARS.
The discussion has headed in the direction of having this at PFR due to the nature of the roads, the fact that it is a 2 day event and the closeness to the PNW for anyone wishing to come up.
If there is enough interest we would be looking at a self funded prize pool as well as our own plastic trophy for the first survivor.
So far we have got 3 AE86's 1 Escort and one TE Corolla on board. There is the possibility of a Volvo coming out to play as well just waiting to hear back.
The question is how many more would be interested in joining the old school class and having a blast?

Not a single bite on this idea here, when it feeds the soul of most of the people who are/were on this forum.
Fuck Facebook and what it has done to forums.

I'm thinking about either looking for a car or prepping the 242GT for this. (probably won't do either)

Well, if I had a running 2wd car and I lived anywhere near western Canada, I’d be all over it. So, there’s that.

Can you clarify this?

What in : "[...] the current crop of 2wd inc R2's at the events [...]" makes it impossible to run pre-1990 cars?

If they do not give you work or bread, then take bread.

The other half of that caveat...I’m still in New England.

Not impossible... just not being run.
We have a good number of older 2wd cars sitting around being not entered in events.
One of the reasons is that it that they are, in all ways, outclassed by the current crop of R2s, R2Ts, M3s, and so-on out on stage. We're hearing people say 'why bother when my competition has - given equal drivers - that much more potential.'

The one of the other factors is that a number of pre '90s rally cars no longer fit into the existing class structure. Any car built with an engine based on the old multiplier rule is unable to run without an engine swap, for instance the 5.0 Mustangs that ran in the late 80's and early 90's. We can also accommodate those cars with an engine from a different vehicle manufacturer, eg the RX7 with a Subaru motor which also falls foul of the current rule set.

Yes, it's a Ranger.
Xr4Ti, it is rwd and was made in Germany.

I'm not following.

How come this guys can compete, and win, against modern cars?

We're not talking about those guys, who have a lot invested in the car, and the drivers.

We're talking about the cars, and drivers, that exist in the region, specifically, and North America in a broader sense.

What's so cool about the R2 that a similarly build old car can't keep up with?

And that is the question.

Maybe they don't want to compete.

Maybe they don't want a good fight.

Maybe they just want a trophy.

Cool is the wrong word. Good, is a better word.
The Fiesta R2 benefits from being designed, engineered, and packaged by M-Sport, who have extensive experience at the top level of the sport.
I haven't had the pleasure, but those who have driven the R2s have said 'they just work.'
Good data on set-up, maintenance schedules, and components that are designed to do what they should.

Basically, there aren't many (any?) 'similarly built' old cars around here.

Hey Vincent, sorry we didn't connect at Big White, maybe we'll see you at Rocky?

You forgot a couple points in your list:

Maybe they just want to have fun
Maybe they don't want to race against cars literally generations newer in all ways.
Maybe they don't want to be hemmed in by a bunch of rules.
