Oh, yeah. Adam had the tail hanging out there nicely, and the Fire Breathing Monster, well, there's nothing like excess! Is there ever enough traction for that thing to hook up without obscene wheelspin?

Thanks for sharing, Kevin!

With 7 or 8 year old tires harder than nails?
Doubt it, and he was really feathering it OR it was spinning.

2wd wins overall
February 25, 2008 10:01AM
Many moons ago (20) a all around great guy named Ray Damitio started the DooWop rallys. Well time moves on and Ray is now 80 years old and he said to many before the start that this will be the last time he sits in a rally car, he just wanted to run in a fun RWD powerful car to have a great time.

Well things worked out better then in a movie, John Lane and Ray Damitio won the event over all in the Fire Breathing Monster that is John's RWD Volvo 262. This is the first time in many years a 2wd car has won a weekend overall at a US event and what a way to go out for Mr. Damitio.

For us on the team it was a weekend of sticking to the basics and doing the little things right. Most of the effort was aimed at getting the tires working. When we found some soft compound tires for the front of the car Sun afternoon we managed to help John & Ray win 2 stages overall. But the weekend was won on consistancy and letting the others have problems.

Thanks Ray for running a fantastic rally - glad we could help you to the top of the podium.

Man what a great event! Very little service needed, great roads, and i got to put a few more faces to screen names. Great to meet you John. Hopefully next year we will have 240s parked door handle to door handle for expose. Shame I missed JV and Kev on Sat. Those are two guys I really would like to have some face time with.

Anyone know when the last time a PNW event was taken overall by a 2wd car? Was it mr lane last time as well?

As for the non Volvo action,
Tom you have that thing hooked up. I would hate to see the poor criminal that tries to run from you. You should see if the state will build you a Rabbit cruiser.

And Adam Crane was fun to watch as usual. His car always looks so balanced likely why it is thrown around so wildly. witnessed your stuff and run near the end of brooklyn. Good off! Very entertaining. Is the car any worse for wear?

Great time. can't wait for the next event. You guys put on a good show

AH HA!
now all we need is photo (graphic) proof of the stuff.

um lower sill panel almost flattened.
cleaned some of the dust off below the number plate.
might have un bent the axle from our nudge on tahoola.
that adventure left us with some decent rear tow-out all sunday, trashed LR wheel bearing and a dented drivers door.

will be building a new rear axle with some brakes to boot.

we had more fun than ever.
good to see kevin and JV. we'll say high to any others sporting the CCCP signs.

That last time a NW rally was won for the weekend was the Volvo of Carl Jardivalle in the early 2000's.

Scott Fuller won a day (Golf) and I think Hintz in his RX7 may have won a day since then. Not sure if they won overall for both days.

Actually, looking at results from years past, as near as I can figure it the last time a 2wd car won the Doo Wop series overall was John Christensen's RX-7 in 1992. So good job John and Ray and the Fire Breathing Monster for accomplishing something that hasn't been done for 16 years!

You Subaru drivers are obviously not driving hard enough, getting beat by old Volvos and Rabbits, ha!

Them four wheel drive turbo cars should have been beating us by minutes (plural!) per stage when we were on the rock-hard six year old Pirellis.

A switch to a pair of equally old Michelins was an eye-opener. They went on the rear and we could now put power down. Our second run through Pico tells that story.
Mr Hintz being so kind as to sell us a pair of used soft Hankooks for the front of the car added the confidence that brought a pair of stage wins on Smith Creek. Had we had a set of four good tires methinks that we would have beaten Karl's old Brooklyn record. The Michelins were pretty used up and old when we put them on. They are somewhat worse now.

Note to self..... Save money on something other then tires!!
The car got sooooo much better with proper tires.

Well heck I wish we'd not broken on Smith. We were going purty darn fast. I'm looking at Pico 1, with my 11:15 to your 12:04 (and there's Dave at 11:02), and wondering if we coulda caught you on smith. Ya whipped us on brooklyn west, 7:06 to 7:17, proving that tires do indeed make all the difference. Note to self: Doowops is the wrong rally and wrong time of year to run hard compound tires. Best grip we had all weekend was that first bit of smith crick before the control arm busted, on those older medium compound Falkens, better than the med. compound michelins we ran on Tahola! Boy oh boy I wish those were still being made!

oh, man that is hilarious!

Narration begins;
the corolla goes hunting in the woods,
it is a careless killer, and the herd is close.
he approaches fast, some say too fast.
a light tap, to confuse its prey,
then with a light flick another is down.
seeing a smaller species, the appetite for large prey over, one is spared, while two are crushed.
the short violence is over and with a roar, the corolla continues it's prowl.
To be continued on Blue Slough. . .

that now tops this video:
http://spitfireefi.com//spitfire/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=oly_rally&id=MVI_3061
a solid second place, in the coarse coarse ciller
