240z

Howdy. After several months of lurking in the shadows I think its finally time for me to post. I graduate in june, and as a graduation gift to myself I'm going to stop obsessing over the idea of rally and finally do it.

I've been told its wise to buy your first rally car, but I have a 240z ready to build that I think would be a blasty blast. Is this a good, unwise, or stupid idea? The only thing I know for SURE is that I want a RWD car with some snort.

Smart move. There is one being built as we speak in Prescott AZ. I have a 73 240z with 40000 miles in the garage, perhaps one day I will build that too.

The 240 idea sounds good but maybe you should think of a 240 you could actually WIN an event with, maybe like the 240 that just won overall this weekend beating dozens of Subarus in the process.

They look like this:

Look another!

Here's a clear piccie of a good 240, remember you CAN WIN with one of these.

You gonna stay in Yakima after school?

You misunderstand. I don't need to win, I just want to look cool! smiling smiley
In anwer to your questions, I'm moving back to Yakima to stay when I'm done with school here in southern California. And the only car I've "built" is a 75' toyota fj40 for rock crawling. So ya... on a scale of 1-10 for rally car building I'd say I'm a solid 1.3
If you know of a screeming deal on a rally prepped 240 volvo, or any other RWD, let me know. I realize that I'd look considerably less cool with my ill-prepped 240z wrapped around a tree.

Nobody said you "need" to win, but some CARS means you could while some choise mean you'll have nothing but frustration as your results.

Naw, maybe more like a 6

The supply of used cars worth a shit is pretty limited; most will need extensive re-working, and often are poor specification (and by being fairly low-spec might be one reason that the car is getting sold--low spec cars aren't much fun)

Building is the SMARTEST option, but not the quickest.

Dave,
welcome.
congratulations on school.

We grew up in the same community and have great memories of messing around in orchards and hills around Naches.

Looking cool in a RWD car is easy.
I'm going to recommend a Toyota Celica as a big un-stoppable cool car.
the corollas are harder to find.
don't worry about the rear drum brakes, they'd work fine. weld the diff, put a cage in it and start to rally.
later you can swap in a sweet turbo motor.

you cannot kill a toyota.
(unless it's an MR-2)

I should be through yakima a bit this summer, if you need help.
still have the barn to work on the car?

^^ what he said. Unless you want to look really cool in a RWD, then you have to be like Adam and I and have a corolla. Clearly. hahaha. Turbo blacktop ae86 would be a super bad ass G5 car.

I would think getting bits for the 240 zed would be getting hard these days but I do not know.

Jay's dad may kick you in the shins has he still has his 240zed in the garage as far as I know and may not like seeing them abused.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo

Do not tell me he replaced it with the car for people that do not know anything about cars - a Saturn. Tell him this behavor is not aceptable from a former National Rally Champion. Though it will save the estate money when they only need to dig a coffen sized hole rather then one to put the whole 240zed in.

I've been lurking here long enough to know that JVL's advice is both wise and frequent. Consider your advice heeded.

I know power isn't the biggest factor in rally racing success, but I noticed the 240z has the max displacement for an OHC motor. Thats just for RA. Not sure what NASA is...

That led me to believe it would have a decent chance.

The barn is better than ever! I should be around Yakima starting around July. I know of a 1st gen Celica "liftback"gt I might be able to get my hands on...
What do you think?
Isn't the celica is a couple hundred pounds heavier than the corolla?
