Volvo at Olympus
April 23, 2008 10:40PM
A Garfield County Sheriff on Ball Grade 1 told me he was going to radar gun the cars. He was located near the top of the crest before the chicain (orange barrels). I asked him after the stage what the top speed was.

"124, and that Volvo was all over the place"

Nice job. you tube video of the Volvo

Holy crap. That's a 262 with a turbo? Yikes. No wonder Jason was giddy about it.

We had a ball without traction.

We are said to have made a number of 'National Competitors' somewhat 'uncomfortable' by going faster then expected.

I can't wait to try that again with descent tires and brakes for the whole event.

We lost brakes shortly after the start of stage 6 and serviced three stages later. Same thing happened on the other side of the car shortly after the start of stage 9. Banjo fitting on the side of the rear caliper has been protected with doubled over tow strap (for years!!) that wore away due to the very abrasive gravel that was sooooo thick and made traction tough to find.

Good times.

Rick nice work with the video. Thanks.

This was done with the Brembo C-4 calipers.

The doubled over tow strap that Dave wrapped around them worked well until now.

I'm changing this now for something more effective that will not include banjo fittings.

I did lots of banjo fittings on my brakes. Just like Ford did on the WRC Escort cars.

THEY have stacks of well trained, disciplined mechanics to check those fawkin things every service---and you STILL read of loss of brakes toooooo often.

You don't.

(If you think, the very nature of a hose whipping around is going to work to loosen a hose end that screws in the way a banjo does., and all it has to do is loosen 1/64 of a turn and it shits the bed)

John believe it or not, this is the first time that the banjo fittings on those C-4 calipers have been a problem.

Just the same, I'm changing the design so that it will just not be possible in the future.

Banjo fittings are a failure waiting to happen.

I'm wishing for calipers with internal cross over plumbing so that I won't have to deal with the external ish that I'm redoing as part of this.

I only noticed them being used at the master to the front. A dual outlet banjo so I'd not have to have a T to go to the two fronts.
Then I did Banjos at the handbrake to to keep the lines nice and low and clean.
