And the smoking a bit, I wonder if a bit more generous crankcase ventilation might help like on this Finnish GpF car done so tastefully:

Maybe John Lane should think about more ventilation also since reports are he's still smoking kinda a lot.

I was thinking of drilling out and installing a much bigger vent on the valve cover of my car when I next have it off.
Also, the PCV valve isn't totally closing so some air can be getting in there.

There are a couple different sized breather holes in the XR4's, most seem to be the littel 1/4" opening, but my black XR4 has one more like 5/8".

The old engine in my black XR4 would still sometimes pop the vent hoses, it did have bad rings in cylinder 2.

A lot of the Merkur pervs say you have to run a Motorcraft PCV valve, and you may have to test several to get one that works. Some also swear by adding a second ball valve in line with the stock PCV.

Yeah, well The Fords I have laying around seem to want a 5/8" hose out the valve cover AND a 5/8" hose from wthe flame trap both going to the catch bottle, and a 5/8" drain back to the sump.

That's a lot of crankcase venting.
