Funny thing is you dont even realize where and how you spent the money until you stop and think about it. Could we have done it for less? Probably for 1500-2000 but i dont think any lesser.
BTW I did have another expense which I forgot to mention which was the Uhaul trailer which was 200 ish. Only place i have to keep a trailer is 2hrs away so dont have one.

Cool thread to bad your so far away i have a friend trying to get off focus cars he
has a running car with 30 miles for 600 bucks needs front core and radiator bumper
and some other doodads. I have

bin looking at them more nothing to great but think you
could do alright in one few down falls that can be fixed like rear drag link and semi
flawed motor but for starter car and the price might be a good choice.

I would suggest got to your guys that buys
the cars for the junk yard and ask if you can get him to buy an auction car for you or
try and get that in, its crazy the cars they get.
I dono about there but hear you

need to be a dealer to get clear title cars most of the time but worth looking in
too, also try towing auctions they some times have wild deals iv seen plenty of old
corollas ser's and some other good starter cars.

I like about everything but support merkurs for the cheep power and cheep parts once you go threw
the car like supra diff and t5 tranny. also keep in mind front drive when you
get in too traction the price sky rockets, most of the time, and the trans axle could be a nightmare.

knock on wood my escort gt welded diff wasint to bad and a total
blast, lame car but it payed for it fun factor plus there dirt cheep you could have
a pile of extra parts for cheep.

Here is my two cents...Have a serious look at rally cross or TSD rallies. Rally cross is fast but more expensive. TSDs are cheap and low risk but you can really build your skills. Put the pro rally dreams aside for a few years and start out with something realistic first. Here is a huge piece of advise that is often overlooked...GET YOUR WIFE INTERESTED!!!!!!!!! If she is on board, literally, you are home free!!!!! TSD is great for this. Take the family car out to a short, non Monte Carlo, event and have fun together. Once she sees that it is safe and fun she may like it. Do some research on the internet. When you introduce the idea to her focus on the "it's not racing" and safety aspects. Good luck!

Here's a good exercise: plan what it would cost for you to go racing for one weekend if you had a FREE car. Find an event close to you, figure out the distance, do the mileage/gas cost, (include gas for the rally car, you can use 10mpg as a guess) find tow vehicle rental or use or wear, figure out how many days you'll be gone, figure food for all meals, then lodging (4 guys to one room is fine), and entry fee. And membership/license fee. And notes fee. And road tolls.

So, completely ignoring the car, how much would it cost you and some buddies to go up there, be there, and come back? Start with that.

Cheers,
Anders

Getting your wife interested is a MAJOR step in the right direction, but also consider finding a buddy who would be interested in racing with you. There are some teams out there who take turns driving and co-driving at events. These guys sort of split the costs associated. It's another idea.

And don't rule out the old Volvos. I picked up my 86 240 wagon for $1000 and have been told, repeatedly, that I could have got a newer, turbocharged model for a lot less money. They are tanks, cheap to mod for power and control, RWD, and you will find a metric shitton of technical info on building one on this site.

Welcome to the fray.

Hey Josh,

Welcome to the nuthouse. Are you planning on Rally WV to compete or volunteer? We'd like to see you there! Get in touch if you have any questions: mark dawt bowers ayut rallywv dawt com . This year's date is Aug 1-2, over in Randolph Co. My son an I are the main organizing dudes at the event, and I do tech inspection too (for NASA RallySport). Everyone here will try to get you steered in a good direction for a car that is as inexpensive as you can. I like to steer folks to at least look at the early 90's Sentra SE-R's for a good basic car that does well in stock form as a starter car. Should be a good one to find in the j-yards.

Do you have connections to bend and weld tubing for a cage? I'm not talking about the entry level class cage work at a typical local dirt circle track; it has to be better workmanship than you typically see there. But it can certainly be done at a local shop or in one's garage.

The suggestion of doing a little budget planning for events before you get started is pretty good advice. There have been a few who just dove in head-first, and then got really discouraged afterwards. At least you can get to several events without towing 1000+ miles! If you do some budget planning, I would look at Rally WV, Sandblast, Rally TN, STPR, Black River, some of the CARS events in Ontario, and Sno*Drift, and maybe 100 Acre Wood, on my list, if I were in Parkersburg.

Regards,
Mark B.
