Fun waste of Time.
June 04, 2008 01:20AM
There was a thread on Wimmin in Rally on www.rallyforum.com and there was something about reaction time and I always have poo-pooed the idea if reaction time being particularly important and I 'splained why.
The some guy put a link to a online reaction time tester
http://getyourwebsitehere.com/jswb/rttest01.html

And people began putting their times up.

So what do you guys think?
Reaction time important?
You should know there was a link to a British study which showed age of fastest time:20, and most consistant 30.

Lets discuss and post your times and if you're asleep or chronic arthritis and multiple broken bones like me.

Do women have faster reaction times on average?

video gamers prolly have some real good reaction times...

I'm not crusty or rusty yet... I'm a spry, froggy 27 year old man.

.2199999999999999 was my best average score of 5. After 3 trials

.201 being my fastest click of all time.

But no matter what can't seem to break into the .19's!!!!

Get .246 consistently without extreme focus, effort, holding my breath, duct taping the mouse rigid to the desk, or putting my eyeball against the monitor.

For best times: pretend you're Bruce Lee then strike the mouse with Cobra Style.

You flakeyboys this was a 2 part thang with the idea of is there sumpin, like fast reflexes, that supposedly gives silly boys an advantage.
Here's from the other forum:

Exactly right!
The tiny differences in supposed "natural" skills are merely the starting point that a guy or a gal brings and at a 100% amateur level that can be a factor, maybe.

But at any slightly higher level there will be a need for some systematic skills TRAINING, and at least with cars, thats EXPENSIVE.
But that training or practice---given the same level of motivation---will be decisive.

There are always old arguments---from boys---about what's decisive and they're always funny to me (retired from making a living racing moto-cross years ago).
They drag out "Reflexes!!!!---ya gotta be young, cause young guys have faster reflexes!!!"

I bug them when i say "No, reflexes are over-rated, with experience you don't put yourself into a position that the reflexes are a factor, and you see situations developing earlier, and AVOID problems"

They say "Strength!!! You gotta be strong!"
I say "Oh yeah, we don't have power steering on the cars? Oh wait look at this! Seems my Sierra rally car does have power steering!! Guess I don't have to be strong"

The critical thing is personal motivation and social reinforcement for certain complex behaviours, eg does society think it's admirable for a person to spend hundreds and hundreds of hours doing some pointless sport at the expense of a normal life.
There it seems that more males seem to choose to do single things even to levels destructive of their personal lives, physical heath and to interpersonal relationships.

And then came the thread on staright reaction time. This if from the morning, one cup, no ciggie.

And one of the boys there asking about any reaction time studies then finding one himself:
Quote

Reaction time is a very interesting subject in itself, I know I drive differently and far better/quicker/safer than I did when I was younger, Id love to read a case study on the reaction time results of people as they age, anyone know of any?.. there must be one out there.

jeremy clarkson did a small series called "speed" that deals a bit with this. in episode 2 "superstars of speed" he gets to play slaps or something like that with michael shumaker. then they cut to a doctor that talks about how everyone has just about the same reaction time as everyone else and the difference is how people are wired internally and how they can deal with all the different things happening at once. he makes the argument that he should be able to drive faster than most people due to experience but they also go on to show that that's not the case. they do show how people are tested to see if they would be good fighter jet pilots and the tests are amazingly simple.

here's the episode specifically dealing with reaction times and all that.

episode 1 is also really good

did it twice, got an average of .20x both times. fastest time was .176.

33

personally, I put more money on the ability to anticipate a situation.

ie. when you drop your pencil on your desk, do you try to frantically grab it before it goes over the edge? or do you simply put your hand underneath the edge of the desk and catch it when it rolls off?

I feel I've avoided several accidents not by fast reflexes, but by anticipating what my actions will do and taking the best course of action.

ie traffic stops suddenly, and do you slam on your brakes (potentially not stopping fast enough and slamming into the person in front of you), or do you pull off the road, or into the next lane to avoid the car in front of you all together, whether you stop fast enough or not?

Its easy to just react....reacting in a way to give you the best outcome (or at least, the best odds of success) is the real skill.
