What drives the prices for a used car? Economics have *never* been my strong suit, but I see ads like this:

And I can't help but think... Huh? WTF??

I just don't get it.

With less than 50K original miles assuming condition is excellent that is on the low side. I have seen a few original, excellent, low mileage XR's sell for real money. It takes a while to find a serious buyer. Much like the $35K escort cosworth's that appear on the US market occassionally.

If it was on the east coast I would seriously consider it as a daily driver even at $4K.

Something without rust would be worth a premium for us east coasters., where even the ones who haven't seen any winter driving need a little patching up.

Four grand for an 85? It would have to be an EXCELLENT example, but I don't see it as unreasonable. Somebody recently had a very clean example on one of the XR4 sites for similar money, would have been perfect for my dad who wants one again. But it went quickly.

The 86 I won at Carlisle in 05 was valued at $4200 by an appraiser. It had 34k on the clock. Car is in great shape. It has started to have parts fail now. I drive it as a dd till winter. If I had the cash I would jump on a Cossy Escort. its all in how much you are willin to pay I guess. I have seen clean XR's sell for 1K in that condition. Rust free car make stronger shells. Less work to reinforce the shell. It boils down to time vs money really.
