WTF is up with you PNW guys?

I'm usually pretty mellow, but this is kind of pissing me off. This is the forum for pissing and moaning, so let me indulge myself.

How come there were only THREE, count 'em THREE, PNW competitors at the Idaho Rally?


It's a cheap event.
It's a relatively short tow.
It's not a car breaker.


Near's I can figure there're only a couple of reasons for skipping the event:

1) I can't be bothered to get my car off the jackstands unless it's a $300 event an hour away, and I'll bitch and whine about anything else.
2) I wrecked my car and haven't rebuilt it yet.
3) I had "real life" come up and bite me in the ass in a way I just couldn't deal with.


C'mon, do you guys want to rally, or do you want to sit in front of your computer and pretend?

"Real life" can be a bitch sometimes. Kinda like "physical therapy" for "elbow surgery". Unless the weather sucks, I'll hafta work, missing the brooklyn bash. Planning on WW, and then Mt hood and/or Merritt.

This isn't really something new Michel. There's always only a few of them up there willing to travel. I know Seattle is nearly #1 on my list of places to move to because I can do 3-5 rallies per year and not have to travel really.

If I wanted the best rally roads I would just move to Idaho-I am sure the fantastic stages Jens found are not the only ones available. We spoke to a sheriff and he indicated that there are more choice roads available.

Next year I will lower my car 2" when I go to Idaho again. Maybe swap a smaller, lighter skidplate too. Definitely soften the spring rates.

It was worth the 940 mile tow just like North NV was worth the 580 mile tow.

no money no time off my new job and no money

really really hoping for hood, but chances are that won't happen either

Micheal, what do you do for work?
How much it pay?

Have kids?
Mortage?
How much?

Paying off any medical bills?
Student loans?

I don't know but getting pissed cause guys can't afford the money or time off seems odd to me.

John, I'm doing ok. I do drive a cheapass Golf and sleep in the back of my van getting to/from events though.


My point was more that there's a lot of complaining about events being too expensive, and then when someone puts on one that's cheap no one goes. 5 teams from CO showed up. 7 teams from CA/AZ showed up. 2 from Portland showed up, and only one from WA made it.

Now, from Denver to Boise it's about 830mi.
From LA to Boise, it's about 892mi.
From Phoenix to Boise, it's nearly 1000mi.

From Seattle to Boise it's 500mi.
From Portland to Boise it's only 432mi.


So the event was way closer to the PNW than anything, yet the PNW had the fewest competitors show up. What gives? Has the recession hit that area harder than CA or CO?

how many local Idaho teams were there?

as for the recession hitting harder, who knows, my guess is that it's probably all a matter of bad timing, too many people who just can't afford it right now (but maybe could in a month or two), too many people who don't have the car finished or rebuilt or whatever, other circumstances

but, I bet there was plenty who wanted to go

From Seattle to Merritt, BC, it's 240mi. However, as far as competitors, there was only a WA co-driver at Mountain Trials.

PNW rallyists are spoiled; there are so many events that they can pick and choose from.

busted car here... I was going to go to work, but nobody wanted to go with me and I just didn't feel like a 500 mile one-way without company. So I stayed home and worked on projects.

I had fun for 5 3/4 stages of Idaho I ran last year, I would definately have gone again with a working car, especially now that it's a gravel round too.

Ah well, next year!

Naw, we talked on the phone last night and I basically agree with him: we're spoiled in the PNW and combine that with the change from previous times---when most of the cars we chose to build cost 100 bucks or free---to a consumer based buy-it-and-bolt-it-on means that many don't choose to do things that are difficult or demanding.
That's a big social shift, vcan't do much about it.

Could be that boys elsewhere are simply used to traveling more, and they budget for it.
