Best way to ship a gearbox???
August 29, 2008 12:06PM
So heres the deal. I've got a spare AWD trans for the Mazda GTX sitting in my buddies old landlord's garage in Boulder, CO. He now lives in Gunnison, CO. There's more GTX stuff in the garage like 14"GTX wheels with hakapaletta snow tire that are like brand new and good size pile of spare parts, but the trans is the only real priority to me as a spare and I want to at least get that before the stuff in the garage disappears for some reason...

I live in Arcata, CA so I'm going to have to ship this thing cos the cost of driving out there to pick it up is out of the question.

What is the best way to go? A freight company of some sort?

He says he might could make a weekend trip out to Boulder, what preparations should I have him make to ship the transmission? I doubt it's something we can put in a box, So should he:

A. find a pallet and strap it down with ratchet straps?
B. Build a cradle for it with 2x4's and metal strapping?
Or what? How do you do this sort of thig?

Looks like it will be residential to residential. About how much should this cost?

Thanks in advance.

too many 'ifs' in that situation.

Or find someone who lives near you that's going to Rally Colorado and have your buddy get me the tranny in the next week and have me bring it to Steamboat to give to someone to bring back to you.

I just put the gearboxes for my GTX and my VW's in a box and sent away.

Get the oil out they do not like that leaking into the UPS trucks - it was about $75 to ship each of them.

I you are going to do the whole think build a box onto a palet.

In the long run reality always wins.

See about some kind of crate.

A couple of things to consider with UPS

A. dimensional weight. Find out where this begins, dimension wise.

B. Anything 70 lbs and over is considered heavy and they charge accordingly.

If your buddy is willing to pack the stuff up, check out UPS hundred weight pricing. I have good luck all the time with this at work.

If you're going to go the truck route, find a freight broker and see what they can do for you. Good luck.

Grayhound is the way to go.
They wont ship to address so someone will have to go pick it up from nearest station but can assure you it will be cheap. I shipped 2 seats for something like 57 bucks while UPS did not like my boxing and was going to charge me 210bucks plus boxing fees
Shipment was from NYC to Reno

No Shit? You can buy a transmission a bus ticket? Your friend places it on the seat, says have a nice trip and you greet it at the bus station and help it walk off the bus?

I bet they make it ride in the back of the bus like some second class citizen or worse make it ride underneath with the luggage.

Is it still based on weight? or Is it cheaper than a person since it's lighter?

its actually grayhound freight division. They use the bus as the shipping tool and you have to go pick it up at the terminal it was destined to go to...
Not familiar with bus tickets as i never took one but i bet its cheaper to ship the tranny. As far as i remember they only go by weight

EFFF UPS.

Ship it fedex in a big monitor box with wood in the bottom.

I think their limit for ground service is 90lbs, a Honda B Series gearbox is a little more than that and they always let me do it. Costs about $60. I've shipped 5 or 6 that way, no worries.

Thanks. Some killer ideas coming from you guys.

I'm waiting to hear back from my buddy Joe and if he can find a box large enough, some plywood, and ratchet strap and two screw in eyes or something to hold it down I think we should be in business. Making a monitor,TV, or computer box into a crate sounds like a good idea.

Drain the tranny first. Prolly just tell him to pull the axle stubs out and turn it up on its side until its dry. Clean the holes up with a rag and put Duct tape over them. After he gets the transmission in the box, lay the axles stubs on top of it .

That should reduce the footprint of the tranny by a little it.
I think it has a bracket on it too that could be removed to make it smaller...Hard going by memory.

Then packing material like peanuts or newspaper to take up the empty space in the box and we should be all good.

Reinforce the bottom with more layers of cardboards, and line the inside with a big ass trash bag. Any stains on the cardboard? Tell it it was a Pizza slice, TRUST ME.

I see a lot of trannies hanging around Greyhound bus stations. Why is this a surprise?
