After 17 years of rallying I had my first roll and then a little later I had my first crash out of an event. I might retire now that I got those tee-shirts.
Jay Woodward showed that tallent is worth more than big fancy car by taking a very beat up old mazda 323GTX with less than steller struts, open difs 1.8L no ecu programing and one set of tires for the whole weekend onto the podium on Sat also winning several stages over the weekend. Not sure how he finished on Sun as they had a electrical issue that cost them 6 min early but again they did manage to set top stage times on sunday too. Derek In the long run reality always wins. |

Total engine failure a tenth from the end of the first stage of the day is demoralizing. Some manner of bad groundwire, maybe something else as well. We fixed it on stage, timed out at 47 minutes, and got like another hour of time penalties for late start and who knows what else. Whatever the problem was, it never reared its ugly head again, and we were pretty damn fast the rest of the day. if only... adding up stage times, we might have been on the podium again.... or maybe I'da gotten all confident and stuffed it into the creek on Pico maybe. So after the first stage issues, my only 2 goals were to not crash, and get under 7 minutes on Brooklyn, and managed to get 'em both done-- by the skin o' my teeth.
I don't know what is making my head spin more, how well we did, or the fact that the car held up! That poor thing, it worked its' little heart out... PS Mad, mad props, again, to John L., Matt M., Greg K., and everyone else that worked their asses off to keep me on the road, and Derek for leeting me use his intercom when the one I borrowed from Matt gave up, and to Chris Baldini for leeting me borrow his strut top and fuel pump relay, even if we ended up not needing 'em, and to Tracy M. for being such a quick study on codriving! Derek......Congratulations at losing your Cherry!! You have been long overdue.
My apologies for not finding the source of the poor running sooner. Don't give up on Rallying dood. We like having you out there to show us what wankers we are. Jay......Congratualtions in a fine finish!! I have to wonder what you are capable of in a better car. I'm also curious as to just Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot was the deal with it that it timed out Sunday. Hmm, John did say I was getting a little crazy with the ebrake. but you should have seen the size of the fish in there!! As the first event i have driven, it was amazing and very fun. lots more fun than sitting quitly on the side of the road with silly signs. (not a transit). all you fellas are fun, and having john around is a good way to get known/introduced. Keeping it floored in my car was easy, it doesnt pick up speed very fast. keeping it on the road was easy (no comment) finishing was entertaining. I'd like to thank Kevvie for serviceing and my lady, britta for being rad. am i slow or was everyone else fast? time to ask kris and fatboyraceworks "I put the hurt on dirt" - adam crane http://CraneRallyCrew.com corolla gt-s "Patches" Op: S.S. |

Adam, Aside from the fishing trip you did great! You just can't believe how fast you needed to drive to come in so far behind... until you complete your 1st Rally. Your stage results were very respectable, particularly on Day 2. It only gets better from here on out. Congratulations! Rich Smith (Beware the legendary 3rd Rally roll-over.) |

So yeah, we had some good fun. It was nice to meet John and say hi to Adam, John kept my brother and I thoroughly entertained on the first day with all of the stories and ideas he had lined up for the rabbit.
I drove up on a snow bank on crane creek. I also bent a stock rabbit a-arm on tahola, luckily I had two reinforced a-arms waiting to go on the car when we got back to service. I had an off on the first day due to not paying attention to my codriver's driections, we high centered on a burm and only by the might of my brother's 150lb frame did we end up getting off the burm. We would've been out and back on the road in about 10 seconds with a diff... Second day started out good....it was nice to come out 8th overall after the second run of blue slough. We lost an intake plug somewhere on pico left, which made for a no power condition below about 5,000 rpm.....which was ok, cause we were running up there all day, but we lost a good amount of time. On pico right we lost an inner drive flange seal and the transmission dumped all of it's fluid into the driver's side CV axle....and it started making good noises on the way back to service. My crew was awesome, they took care of every issue the car threw at them, and luckily we had all of the spare parts on hand to fix the problems. After talking with Jim Thompson out on the stages, and getting a pat on the back from Pete Vanbogart at service, we knew we could take it easy the rest of the day....the last three stages we dialed it back a notch, and floated home... ended up snagging a novice trophy as well as a group two win on day two, it was a great way to end a rediculously satisfying weekend. I've been spectating for years, and met Adam and Gus out on a few stages a long while back. I'm just happy I took the plunge and did so well our first time out. It'll be even more fun next time if the attrition level doesn't take a nose dive like it did at this rally -Tom DemonRallyTeam | Fine Tuning | CTS Turbo & RP Turbos | RalleyTuned | JRM | Meister Autowerks Spitfire EFI | Product Apparel | JVAB Imports | NLS | AP Tuning | USRT Add us on Facebook | Next Event: 2013 Olympus Rally June 22-23 Olympia, WA |

Quoting Rich Smith........"Beware the legendary third rally roll-over"
Rich......Why wait? 'Tis far better to know darned good and well that your roll-cage is TESTED TOUGH!! Shoot...I got the roll out of the way in my first real rally in the Volvo. One will be much more intimate with the car after getting to attend to the coachwork a dozen times or more. JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

Hey skye a new photo for the top.
I figure if you are going to go out you should make sure to bend all the bits. I do not know how fast we were traveling when I hit the bank but right before the turn I did have a look to see the Brantz showing 97MPH. When I hit the bank, we tore the ball joint off, shattered the brake disk, pulled the drive shaft out, bent the reenforced a-arm, zig-zaged the mounting bolts, bent the rear beam, de beaded the tire, and bent the tie rod end. All I can say is the car is fast, very fast, much faster than it was a few months ago, with some minor changes I made to it. Up to that point on the stage the car was a rocket ship. In the long run reality always wins. |
