Great Day, beautiful weather. Maybe a little dusty at the end.
Started 23 cars, finished 18. Davies crashed on first run of Gilhouley. Byron Garth was absolutely flying, but damaged a front corner pretty bad on stage 5. Victor/Norma and Gottlieb/Rustigan rolled on stage 7. Saw the Audi at the Charburger, pretty mangled, but I think they were both ok, (I saw Victor inside.) I don't know what happened to Gloria and Tim in the little Geo. Started 29 bikes, finished 24. Milner retired after stage 3 and multiple offs. Gaynor retired after stage 4 with bearing issues deep inside his KTM 640. Jennings road stage 7 and the transit back on a flat Michelin Desert and didn't have enough time to get it changed to start stage 8 in front of the cars. David Jansen had some trouble on stage 3, (tires/gas?) but restarted to run for seat time. Dave Wachs retired after stage 7 with his KTM's gearbox puking oil. Thor Drake is super fast, winning 7 of the 8 stages outright. Unfortunately, road points pushed him back to 6th overall. Cody Crane is also super fast: Fastest on stages 1 and 6. Charles was no slouch either, winning stage 7. The top 4 places were only separated by 30-or so seconds. Mager's car looks great. Doug's car was loud and a crowd faovorite. Two great looking Saabs on the entry list this year. Mike S has posted up a video on youtube. Some good pictures here: http://alinbeaverton.smugmug.com/gallery/6299745_jHwCs#P-1-12 |

Great event and amazing weather. My first experience with the bikes. i was hesitant but it was great. My wife and I worked Stop Control on Gilhouley, stages 2 and 5. Some of those bikers were pretty shook up when they got to us. Didn't end up seeing any action but getting to interact with all the competitors was great.
Anders, I wanted to chat with you but ended heading back to ptown right as you got to the char-burger. Maybe another time. I recommended to apple pie a la mode. Hope you liked it. When I left I was under the impression that I might be coughing up 50 bucks to Cody crane. Wish that would have happened. Great driving on both Cody and Charles part. Two 2wd cars right at the top. How cool. I don't want to work anymore. Not because I don't like to work but I want to drive! I have a very itchy right foot at the moment. Thanks to Simon. Can't wait for next year. Zap zap my ass... |

Working flying finish with the bikes was interesting and took the first few through to get used to. I'm really glad we didn't have to try and read their numbers in the dark.
I think it's pretty awesome that they opened it up to them and I hope to see more of it around here in the future. As for Gloria, what I picked up is that they were having trouble with their lights working and then not working and finally just not working and that they couldn't see where they were going. |

OMG the weather was fantastic , I think Anders brought it with him. Got to briefly talk with Anders, met Bill Beers also. Missed Jens though.
Bikes seemed a great addition and I suspect they'll be included at DooWops. Malcolm Davies got his outside tires against the berm on a corner, only it wasn't really a berm, just loose gravel. The car slipped just a few feet wide and smacked a large stump. Ruined the pass door, rear 1/4 panel, strut, control arms and snapped the hub . Drove onto the trailer though, nothing holding the RR wheel but the fear of falling off Mark Mager said he was going to run hard enough to shake down the new car, but not flat out. He held to that promise and drove a smart rally. Kudos to him ! I heard Victor's Audi was pretty toast. Mager said cage was bent pretty good. Saw Norma on Sunday morning and she was getting pretty sore, but a huge smile as always, what a trooper ! Prolly not smiling much by Monday morning though..danged racing rheumatism... Had a couple complaints about sweep speeds and behavior, our next big problem to deal with. Nice to have a one day event with great stages, breakfast with Damitios Sunday morning, Xmas shopping in tax free Oregon and a dcent home arrival in the evening. Great job by Simon and crew, wished I was younger and had the old Yamaha Enduro back. |

I've seen the sweep yahoos being way beyond sensible at Doo Wops last coupla years and think it's pretty nuts how silly and tippy they get---especially in light of all the endless BS about ever crazier absolute crazy WRC style cages----in uncaged vehicles noted for flipping and with no safety stuff in the things or helmets. I've heard too many people say "They wanna play rallydriver?----get in a car and enter" and too much people shaking the head. What happened to the old idea of using CARS to be fast sweep and the trucks as second sweep/rescue? > > Great job by Simon and crew, wished I was younger > and had the old Yamaha Enduro back. Forget the age thing, I wish I had 2 knees with cartilige still in and at least a few more ligaments still attached! And a newer left shoulder and left hip. This year there was an advance car roll at Oregon Trail -totaled- a sweep roll at Wild West-again totaled , advance or sweep crashed back east, not sure of which event. RA's insurance, and RA for that matter, is not happy.
Quite honestly Forespring has let it get out of hand here. Nice to have volunteers, but when they start demanding gas and lodging and then endanger the sport it's time for different volunteers. Not that friggin hard to be pace or sweep. |

Our 1st year Chief of Controls at RWV was not ever C of C again partly because of reports of fast driving. I know that you can't drag along and get the job done, but I have standing threats to all course cars that they will be pulled immediately for any fast driving. And car 0 is told to go at 75-80%, no faster. With a closed course, the temptation is great.

Gene, you're not saying the GUYS are bad, but rather that a "sitchy-ation" has gotten outta hand and become a "bad sitchy-ation". I think the worst we could say is this whole thing has grown out of the whole claimed need for dedicated crews for everything, combined with people knowing there's a lotta dough be thrown around by the guys who can afford big semis and motorhomes (plural) that they figure they goona git some, too. I suggest consideration be given to rotating the pace and sweep rather than the deal we've seen in the "00ies" where one person does pace for YEARS. And back to a more loosie sweep arrangement: 1 car followed by one truck. > > John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember!
