Newb Rally wheel and tire question
November 07, 2008 07:13PM
So looking at gravel wheels. Seems like Team dynamics is the way to go for the money I want to spend.

car is a 88 323 GTX. 2500lbs.

Do i need 15x6 or 15x7

If I'm running a wheel spacer should I get wheels with more offset like 50mm to try to get the scrub radius back to where it needs to be?

15x6 you can get 38, 40, 45, 49
15x you can get 40, 45, 48, 53

as far as gravel tires go I've got 205/60/15 on 6.5" et40 wheels now. The tires seem too big for the car.

195/60x15 is equal to 16/62-15

205/65x15 is equal to 17/65-15 seems like a bigger car tire.

That being said should I run 16/62/15's or 15/65/15's on 6 or 7 inch wide wheels?

You want the tire to be somewhat narrow right so the vehicle weight has more pounds per square inch on the contact patch to get down to the hardpack under the loose stuff?

Ignore this stuff it's just my notes...
In stock:
15x7 white 800 total plus tax 4x114.3
15x6 silver 760 total 4x100 need redrilled. Ehhh...
Order is 6-8 weeks. Not a problem

6" is plenty for your car.
14/62 x 15 is enough tire and weight.

It's not like you have some ripsnoprting 230 bhp car.

Gotta 1.8 motor @ 17psi on a larger turbo

It's an outta have. Ain't been on a dyno. Gtech said it has 245..

Guys in OZ running the same combo make 270 @ the wheels.

JV is right. 205 is way too big a tire for a 323, so is a 195. I don't care how much power you think you have. For one thing you're going to have rubbing issues all over the place with that big of a tire. You wanna guess what size tire Millen used to run on the Group A 323? 175/65-14, then later in 15" diameter. He went pretty fast.

I trust you guy's opinions a lot and thats why I asked to get a voice of experience.
Looking to get a good combo that's going to work well the first time.

A 14/62 is similar to a 175/70

I found this chart handy. It has the equivalents of all the Michelin rally tires to BFG tires sizes that I can understand. I have no frame of reference when I see 14/62 to know about what size tire that is.

I've been running 195/55/15 street tires on 6.5" wheels with no rubbing ever.

And yea Rod Millen went faster than I'll probably ever go.

It's easy. 14 is the tread width in centimeters and 62 is the diameter.

Those are relatively short street tires. I remember when Ross Foster built his first 323 he brought it to my shop for a logbook and he had some big rally tires on it. I don't remember what size but the car had positive camber to keep the tires from rubbing on the struts!

Um... what?
If you have your choice of offset, why would you still run a spacer?

And bigger tires weigh more, too. More mass that has to rotated using precious ponys. In addition to the bigger maybe not fitting so well, issues.

Everytime I load the van, I am reminded of how heavy those rally tires are. Significantly heavier than street tires.

I'm running a spacer so the brakes clear the wheels.

Maybe I won't have to with these wheels cos they'll have more clearance. But I won't know until they get here.

Ya prolly won't be getting those numbers out of a BPT when the 34mm sodastraw is installed. I know "they say' you can flow air to 300 hp through that, but I spect unless you play with big cams and who knows whatall alse you'll see more like 220.

Jay I think I'm just gonna say fuck it go open class. I'll get worked but my brakes aren't stock and in G5 you can't change the brakes right?

I heard you talking about getting new wheels... what is your new setup gonna be?
