I thought for the front at least the Porsche 944 used the same diff as the 016 used in 5cyl Audis. Surely (cough) someone makes a diff for that?

(and maybe that was the $9k used one)

944 turbos and S2's came with LSD's as an option at least. Might have been standard, I'm no expert. Also, Quaife makes an ATB for the 016 and Guard also makes their own version of the Torsen style diff for about $1400 and much stronger than the Quaife. For the budget minded you can put the rear Torsen unit out of a V8 Quattro in the front of an 016 but you just need to do some minor machining to either fit the smaller 016 bearing on one end of the torsen or machine the 016 case cover to accept the bigger V8 bearing. You can get V8 Quattro rear Torsens all day long for $150-$200.

We ran Torsens. A proper clutch type was the expensive one.

Wow, the way you put it makes it seem so easy... sadly I think it's going to have to wait until next fall when we have the funds, the time and the shop to do it correctly. By that time hopefully Houston has the car running efi and the rear suspension well sorted yet still wants to sell it for god knows what reason.

Audis did well back in a day when raw power could overcome rather poor ballance. Today we have 34mm restrictors so no one makes a lot more power then the rest.

Also the Audis that did well had to be driven with a level of commitment most pvt teams would not reach. Notice that in the video's they only really look like they are racing when driven at the limit. Below the limit they are understeering pigs that wish to slide into the ditch and die.

I love the GpB Audis but I do not wish to drive on on the stages

In the long run reality always wins.

I feel obligated to speak up here...
I I am the complete nut that MADE a replica group b Audi.
I have driven a full size 4000 and the short 87.5 in wheel base car.
The 4000 drove great OVER 40 MPH but under it pushed like a pig!!!
The short car has gotten rid of the slow speed problems and I think because of the aero on the car has not picked up bad ones at high speed (apart from the massive drag!!). That is not to say that you don’t realize it is a SHORT car you have to be right on the ball to drive it quick! Let your mind wonder and you are in the ditch!!
A 20v turbo would be a great motor but they are not cheap in any sense. I have been thinking of a hi-bred 20v motor that may be better in price and useable torque band but lack the funds now to try...

The suspension has been talked about here also, in short there is none. JVAB may be able to fit something so that would be your only good choice.
I love the Audi but it is a love/hate relationship...

Look what happens when I post here on his computer, he signs up and then thinks he's got something to say.

Does this mean I need to stop talking shit about him now?

Har!

I just sat down to read this thread - many an intersting thought.

First Ted - I was going to kill myself - but only 3 out of the 6 Audi's in the drive are working and I just don't have time for that.

Next - it is a love of the history of the sport - Old Schul Audi's rule - nothing like that 5 cylinder sound - and yes it requires comitment - so what?

First car? - 2wd fella's, learn to drive there - and preferably FWD. I've thought about going back to 2wd to finish learning winking smiley

Any who - watch for a 2nd bad ass Audi coming out of NudeHampster - I've infected another - but I think they were a carrier anyway tongue sticking out smiley

The 4k is going to have a few little extra's added to it this winter - looking forward to 2009 smiling smiley (BTW - had to sell the WRX to pay for the new stuff - so yeah, no doubt, it takes some cash - but there's nothing like beating Sube's and Evo's in a VERY old historic car)

Hope to see you all on the stages soon - until then - happy holidays...

and get back to working on the car already !!

Tell Cutler to get everything buttoned up and get his entry in for TimO's event. :-)
