Yes, Reno was a giant freezing clusterfuck. I was Sweep Captain and Course Closing.

In all fairness, Pat and Denise made a Herculean effort to keep that event running. It was ultimately undone by the poor planning, inattention to detail, and lack of communication by organizer, David Hackett.

I know a little more about some of the behind-the-scenes issues. This isn't the right forum in which to discuss them, but yes, Kris and every other competitor, and every worker has a right to be pissed.

The really annoying thing is that the failure of the event this year stems from exactly the same thing that nearly caused the event to fail last year. Hackett had failed to cross his T's and dot his I's, and the only thing that saved it last year were the efforts of the stewards and Net Control. You'd think it would've been a learning experience, but instead this year it was worse.

I dunno. It's frustrating. That event has some great potential. However, unless a well-prepared organizer takes over, it's doomed.

Wild West Major problems

Reno Major problems

Cherokee Trails Canceled

Rally New York (Tarmac) Major Problems

I am not pointing fingers just acknowledging that several rallies had less than ideal situations for everyone involved.

Personally, I like Grants idea of Rally Underground. I'm sure that, starting out, the "events" would be on the smaller side, but if you do things on an invite-only basis, then the people running would be running on an honor system. There is something to be said about being able to run a rally (or work one, imo) when you know you can completely trust those around you to do their part to keep things moving and safe.

As always, I'm down to help out in any way that I can when it comes to rally. Just let me know.

While you may feel you can trust the people, can you trust their parents. Their spouses? Because that's who will likely sue the shit out of you and everyone involved if anything happens.

The first rule of Rally Club is, You do not talk about Rally Club.
The second rule of Rally Club is, You do not talk about Rally Club.
The third rule of Rally Club is, You sign your waiver in blood.

I think Perce-Neige 2006 was a good example....

The night/day before the rally Maniwaki and area gets what...atleast a foot of snow?? on NFP, crews get stuck in the snow...but worked through and get stuff done.

Even then...did Maniwaki not foot the bill for plow drivers to plow the roads all night?? Plows broke and got stuck...some were even left out there!!!! I think they even sanded some big hills so the 2wd guys would make it

Rally still pretty much ran as planned...however a couple stages got cancelled mainly cause the rally ran much too late.

Speaking from a few year's experience in Eastern Canada: The organizers there are seasoned and the same core group have run the events for years. A slight change in schedule is not a big thing for them. The road use is secured and there's never a question of having use yanked just before an event.

I still suggest that folks that can run an event or two North of the border. Simply awesome! :-)

Cheers! John

Couldn't agree more.
And I'll just add Maine to that list. something is up that two events in one weekend went so far haywire.

They had some last minute problems with the snow, I don't know who paid, but I heard the plownig bill was huge. There was a broken grader on one stage that we had to drive around, 2 stages and one service area cancelled. But, we got to run most of it. Winter events do have extra challenges. Thanks to the people who persevered to make it happen!

Although this thread is a bit dated, it's a good one to throw .02 toward since those are both local events.

Funny thing is that I was planning on running both of those events in '05 and '06. Both years' plans went, well, not exactly as planned..grinning smiley

In '05 couldn't get the car together in time for WW (which went according to plan, as usual), but was definately going to Reno regardless.. Good roads, decent entry fee, _relatively_ close. So, busted ass trying to get the car together for Reno, it was not looking good for the GC8..So was going to run a '71 510 G2 instead. Really looked forward to it, was spending time hot lapping in the snow, it would be tons of fun. Guess what? It dumped 18-22" of snow on Wed., 4" more on Thursday, and wasn't going to thaw by Friday. Shit, snowed in and can't leave Bend!!! Packed snow almost to Reno.. That 5-6 hour drive would now be 10-12 hrs of white knuckle before any stages..My codiver was booked and went anyway. She and her partner worked the stages and commented on the disorganization/cluster-f in '05 , but that the roads were worth it..Teething pains etc. 13-14 cars on the entry list, 0 car crashing out/blocking stage, among other things, but no snow and fast, good roads..Too bad that didn't go well, as it will have a tough time getting entries after this year..Good thing that wasn't the national, as it sounded even more nightmarish than WW.

We didn't hear of the potential road closures until Wed., but that was a concern of mine a few weeks in advance due to the brutal storms pounding the Peninsula. Got a glimpse of some 50-60mph sideways, pissing down, torrential rain a couple weeks prior in Oly..Nasty stuff. To spite the "issues", we had a car that was running well, our plans were set, and we were rallying. Whatever the schedule turned out to be..This was our last event of the season, the year end party.. No mechanical bull needed. Although it was pretty funny to watch Travis get bucked off that thing! Better to watch Kala on the bull..She takes bull riding to a new level..

As far as RA's choice between the two on the same weekend goes; there must have been reasons for the swap for WW to be the last event. Can't say for sure, but have a couple of hunches..

The NW organizers run a pretty tight ship, and proved their muster pulling out something from nothing, albeit not nearly as many stage miles as we'd like. All of the stage roads (120+) were gone officially on Wed., to get a fallback plan together, and get it to work. Was it what we wanted to run? NO Was it it what they wanted us to run? NO Was it Nahwatzel? Not even close..But it showed how to spite all of the shit (and 30 days of weather) that was thrown at the organizers they still got together a plan for us to rally, and for that we should support them in return. At least they are giving a $350 credit towards Olympus, which was something.. They had the workers, hams, emts, and the logistics handled very well for what was going on. Another more and more uncommon thing anymore, spectators at both ORV and Pacific Raceways.. Those guys bust their asses for us to have roads to go play on.. or in this case a mudbog and a track day..smiling smiley Talk about opposite ends of the grip spectrum.. One day lucky to get your car going 50 in the muck (will be scraping that off the car for a year), the next day going 115 into turn 1 at Pacific Raceways. Oddly enough, it didn't rain either day.. We made the most of the weekend, and it was actually, wait.. FUN. Not what was expected, but sometimes you just have to go with the flow and see how things shake out.

Funny how the Rally Gods taunt us, but we still rally on. That's what it's all about.

I'm sorry that Mitch had to make the drive out and not know what was up, that was BS. There were others that did the same and ran.. To each his own. Yellowstone was probably a nice transition between the rally chaos and the daily grind. Glad we got to chat at the ORV park for a few.

It'd be nice if everyone used all of their negative energy to get things heading in the right direction..We all want what's good for rally, let's make it happen. Enough whiny bitching, it's time to try and make things better.
