The wise thing to do is form a club, like a real club registered with the state as a not for profit (but not a tax exempt one) company, co-op or like such. The club then buys the car and owns things. Members and people pay dues in cash or kind (parts). The driver then rents the car for events, the fee can be nominal and designed for the fluids etc. Insurance and registration in club's name.

With a little imagination said club could grow to buy more then one car, and someday might even buy some land or land rights. Said club could then hold events on said land where members show up in their cars or in one of the club owned cars to play around for the weekend.

Recently a former co-work of my wife took a lesson at dirt fish - she knows like nothing about rally - it was just a fun thing to do. First thing she asked me - is there a club I can join to do more of this?

Imagine lowering the barrier to entry so new people join the sport... hey like man that mgiht be a good thing for everyone.

The easy thing would be a 503 c (7) corporation also known as a social or recreational club incorporated in the state of Washington or Oregon (for the PNW)

Not the tax deductable 503 c (3) type we think of when talking about girl scouts.

While we are on the subject..... Would there be any interest in putting together a similar car on the east coast?

Yes.

Sean, you can take the powerstroke down to oregon if you want (at the end of the month).
I might even be able to tag along.
(and pay for gas)
speaking of, where are we going to store/build this car? gas/diesel is expensive.

I could find a spot, or JV, or Gene, or maybe keep it at Dirt Fish. Talked to my mom about the 503C club, and she will help me set it up, that way the club owns the car. Now we need a club name. I am for simple, NW Rally, or NW Rally Anarchy, something like that.

I can contribute $100, and maybe some time.

I like Derek's idea of forming a formal club, with dues. I realize this flys in the face of anarchism, but could nice to eventually evolve into a real club, maybe put on events (rallycrosses?) to raise money for building more club cars.

It would probably be better to use the gained money for offsetting the costs of events, vs building more club cars. 1-2 loaners would be good, and then the extra money would in theory lower entry fees. At least the fees for events that come under the club.

In a perfect world, you could have the PNW Rally Club, and encompass WA, OR, and ID and then have one overlord group that parents the [insert name of the ashes of the PRG], ORG, and who ever ID rally is ran by.

So, by having dues and whatnot, There is a potential for lower fees, as some of the club money could go to EMS, Road use permits, and what ever else is needed, vs JUST the entry fees.

I'm totally guessing on this, but in my world, that is how it would work, haha.
