Re: trucks

- I've had great time beating these "million dollar" trucks with Stock Class Starlets, Corollas and Volvos in Californian Rally Series and others.
- First there were this factory Ford by McDonalds at Carlsbad rally sprint. I asked how much HP he has. "750", he told proudly. I said; "I got 75 and I'm gonna beat you!" He laughed.... until I did. We never saw Mr McDonald again.
- Then we sent home great Ian Steward and son Brian. They both tried but got badly beaten and never came back. To Ians credit he gave us rally guys all the glory without crying - the only off-roader to do so - and paid a visit to my shop to talk about WRC and rally in general. Ian's a classy racer.
- There were a lot of hoobla about Bill Holmes "stock block" racer. First; it's a cheater. He's got an all aluminium engine by SVO when SCCA rules dictated "Production engine". But who cares, we beat him with Stock Class 120hp Corolla at RIM anyway....
- The funniest truck team was "The Team Rebel" from Lancaster. A big Ford with a funny twin pedal tractor brake system! He turned the damn thing by locking LH or RH rear brakes!!! On RIM's cliff roads... They were crazy and I enjoyed their company.
- And the list goes on
PS. I like trucks IF they're well built, like Clive Smith's Pike's Peak one. That could have been an overall winner 'cause it was built like a Gr4 Escort! The others just build HP and to take jumps flat. No handling. No hi-speed balance.

Come on Mark, I know his name but I didn't want to make more pissy-shit of it and get guys like Eli, and whoever the anonymous guy is who keeps posting more photos feeling all compelled to try and uphold the 'honor' or Holmes by writing even more fantasy filled über-mythos ka-ka about how grueling the stages are in Californica. It is just tooo silly to read with a straight face, and its wrong.

But Mark, I am not wrong about the results I was quoting.
Here in the PNW he was routinely beat by 6-7 local guys in ordinary junk-n-stuff, some who, like me were not entered in the so called "National" or "Pro-rally" class.
Here in the PNW we have always (or at least since 1984 when I first started, run the Divisional or "Club" guys the FULL DISTANCE as the guys paying the HIGHER entries.
Hence it is very easy to plug in stage times from the 2 Divisionals and see exactly where your 2 days stage times would have placed you in the "Pro" class, and for that matter how your stage times stacked up and follow stage by stage.

You really gonna waste my time and make me dig up old results??

Saying that the only people who beat him on the NOTORIOUSLY FAST SMOOTH STPR stages where Millen, Buffum, etc doesn't say much cause the NE fields were always very thin.
MOST of the NE guys doing the National series were also routinely spanked BADLY buy MANY MANY PNW locals when they ventured out here.

And 10 years later I managed to beat all but 7 or so guys in Maine on 4 event old tires, with a new codriver, lots of event long problems AND after not driving on gravel at all for over 2 YEARS .

Sure it was a Gp2 win and fun but when you consider that nearly EVERY SINGLE GUY IN FRONT had driven virtually every event in the National series during that 2 years [/] what it really says is the fields were, and remain, very VERY WEAK.

He did break a lot, but you fail to give

Sponsorship= golden chains.
A one event he was laughing as I said that the Prize money "nearly covered the cost of the PS hoses blown" in that event.
There were parked next to me. They were all brand new hoses, I guess the sponsors didn't want to opt for pretty stainless stuff.

> How fast it would be in todays crop of rally cars
> is another matter.

How fast would todays rally cars be if driven with the throttles open a bit more often is also another matter.
Or if anybody bothered to learn to brake rather than playing TV star and just half assed dragging their brakes cause soembody told them "You CAN'T DRIVE without LFB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Point is that aside from the well know extremely weak fields in the past or the current low budget hodge podge in CRS, trucks just makle a lot of noise for rather modest results, and cost as much as anything.
Remember:
Our PNW boy Bottles routinely beat every turbo 4wd car except Jardevall.

That's not a hard rule to follow, we did it to prevent people getting all haughty behind the "protection" of being what they think is anonymous, but which most of us take as "in hiding".

Put your name up, and please, spare us more "action shots". Yeah that truck can throw some dirt, so can anything else.

How about posting something more pertinant or interesting a build budget for that?

THREADJACK WARNING:

Have any of you TRUCK guys ever come across Build Spec's for the short wheelbase Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero/Shogun's (Dodge Raider) that were run in the Dakar in the 1980's?

I imagine they would be similar to D-50/Mighty Max off-road spec's.

Name an American rally with stages rougher than Gorman, Treeline, Rim, or Desert Storm.

My point was only this. The roads are rough down here. Trucks do well on rough roads.

That's it, take it or leave it, or write another 5 pages trying to refute it.

Is the repetitive redundancy? Is there some slow way to turn on a dime?

If any car including POS front wheel drive cars are understeering it is because the
driver doesn't have a clue on how to drive.

Now you're really talking pure California BULLSHIT.
Anybody up here who is any good has never comented on the roads down there being unusally rough, and over the years have typically beating virtiually everybody down there when they visit there.
When i serviced for my Friend Eric Eaton at Rim-job in 2000 I asked what he thought of the roadfs "How so?" was the answer. I asked well are they rough? "Not especially that I noticed" Eric was up to 3rd in the biggest POS Maz-dog in the history of North American rallying (and got a puncture, dropped to 8th and drove back to a good 4th OA and was reeling in 3rd AGAIN.
Granted he is an ex Professional Moto-crosser like me so we look at rough a bit differently than lame ass car guys.

No, most do to poor choices.

Holmes was a minute :34 off the overall

And the Mosers were just xxxx out of an overall win too-----in a car costing a mere fraction of the lead 2 and with vastly less rally experience.

Eli get real, what do you base your comments on the roughness and toughness of "the rest of the country on?

Re: trucks

Wow. This thread is the most incredible font of misinformation I've ever seen.

Lessee. Where to begin?

Jeff's truck is fast as snot, and he's been regularly posting top-ten stage times. Jim Pierce was even faster in it (sorry Jeff). It also costs a fortune.

Bill Moore's F150 also cost a fortune. He ran fast on the rougher stages at Desert Storm last weekend, although judging from his tracks he was all over the read. He put up a good fight but was outrun by an open class Subaru with Proflex suspension both days.

The Mosers are quick, but hardly rookies. Tim's got more racing seat-time than all of us put together, although not all of it's in rally. They were pretty damn fast in a PoS 16v Golf though.

Everyone keeps saying how fast Bottles is, and he definitely was, but has he ever driven anywhere but in the Olympic Peninsula?

You've all mentioned Guy Light's CJ, but not his Sonoma. He had some Production-class wins in that, though I don't know how he did in the overall standings. It's still being run, but not by him.

I've driven Doo Wops, Oregon, Olympus, and Rim, Gorman, Treeline, and the SoCal roads are definitely rougher and tighter.

Attention span need letting you down to read a couple of paragraphs?
>

Eli, now you're being what most of the country see SoCal as: you state things but when asked a simple direct question, you don't even respond, and that's lamer than shit-
I asked how YOU came to your conclusion that the stages are the roughest in the country?
I suggest that you're merely repeating stuff you've heard others repeat.

I heard the same thing about some of the stages at Lake Superior, specifically those around Mandan Road. I loved it, lots of jumps, lots of need to pick a line, AND it was all 3rd and 4th gear, or up to a bit over 90mph.

Maine is reputed by some to be "very rough", I
didn't think so at all compared to WA stages I've done.

But come on Eli, don't be a keyboard expert, tell us how YOU concluded the SoCal stages are so rough.

(Of course there are sections which are shit and some people like that, but what the fuck, can't you guys learn how to build cars strong enough and maybe try missing some of those worse shit?)

(By the way when I did moto-cross, SoCal guys were always ranting like you guys are doing about how rough and hard and fast the moto-cross tracks there were.
And the few guys from SoCal which ever ventured overseas were shocked that their tracks were neither rough, fast or difficult----once they had actually seen more than their own backyards.)

Did you make it all the way thru 18 lines?
Whew! Good job!
