Many of the japanese cars are the same 12.5mm thread on the inner rod. I use Subaru impreza inner tie rods on my XR

Longer, and have fine pitch threads at the outer end. I trim them down about 3/4". I also use a BMW 320i outer tie rod, it has the matching fine pitch threads, and the same pin size and taper

OK so memory worked. (whew)

Ryan check the length of the rack bar----end to end not including the screw in "inner socket assembly" as Ford calls the tie rod assy.

Like scribe a mark on the concrete for the Ford, lay the Volvo on one line and scribe a mark, measure the difference. That's where I was thinking the Ford is just 3/8" longer.

Next look in the female hole---I betcha you like looking in female holes---and see how deep the threads go, then measure the depth on the Ford..
We wanna know if i could take off 3/16 of the bar on each end to make the bar length the same as Volvo....It might take a minute on the lathe.

when i measured it it was more like about 1 1/2-2" we need to lose in overall length. if i cant find anything off the shelf may just remove a section, weld and add a sleeve. the biggest fear i would have is the steel becoming brittle after welding

what could go wrong?

On the Length Over All of just the rack bar?

We're not talking the same measurement...

The xr rack is 3" longer overall. So 1.5" on either side. I donno if there is enough thread on the volvo tie rod for end and lock nut. I'll check tomorrow.

The bar is 3" longer. The threads extend roughly .680" into the bar. Oddly, the passenger side hole is drilled in almost the length of the bar (its hollow). Does this help?
FYI only thing better than looking into a female hole is sliding my mic in there (for measurement purposes ofcourse).

Yea, I found a shell for $400... Sadly classing a xrat to run with volvo power gear sounds less than awesome, and when you buy this many volvo power parts, you use them.

yeah understandable, im kind of at the no turning back point with the volvo too, but the xr popped up in my hometown at a steal of a price, and its 75% done. it'll be another year before the volvo could see a stage. been waiting 8 months on suspension and thats kinda step 1. ill still build the volvo, but ill do it over time and stuff that i was gonna pay to have completed can now be done on my own as i will have something to get out on stage with. plus the xr has all jvab goodies, so i can reuse stuff when the inevitable wadding up of the fist car happens. as for the rack swap it seems like a howe steering quickener is a lot simpler of a solution...

build or buy????

both...

2.6 turns with real good on center feel is good enough..
And its in the car already..

Let's talk on the phone.
