hey, build it quick and get it log booked, before the rules change. This really should be the only priority. Everything else last. That way you're grandfathered. And you're not stuck adding and adding and adding. And the rules change every year. It's been pretty fucking retarded for the last 5 or so years.

Grant- how are you going to be able to run the XR in RA, BTW? No turbo?

Full Group 5. I had a license and ran group 5 in SCCA so grandfathered into a regular license. Plus I don't really suspect I'll run too many rallies to start out with. Mostly hill climbs and lots of time at CORE. Maybe run Cog in September. If I move to Tucson in the summer, I may run Prescott, Desert Storm, or Laughlin. Depends upon school schedule and finances. There's some overseas possibilities too that may result in a built Merkur spending some time in storage.

Hi Pieter,

RWV and RallyTN are the second closest rallies to you; both about 8 hours from Clemson. Only Sandhills SC is closer. For rallying in the US, prepare yourself to do some towing. If this is news, then be prapared to possibly allocate part of your budget to a reliable tow vehicle, and a trailer or at least tow dolly.

The Merker is as reliable as any of the other cars discussed. The real factors in reliability are not some Consumer Guide type of things, but how well that car has been maintained, how careful you are to check it regualrly and R&R worn parts, how well you detect and mend developing problems, and how well things like wiring harnesses and hoses are secured and protected. Parts and cars should be OK to procure; they are reaching the point where some of the parts are not as easy to buy right off the shelf as they were, but this applies to all of the cars discussed to some degree or another. The base engines and trannies have a lot of commonality with other cars, and lots of good performance parts, hence their potential for long term upgrades.

I will still express my view it is a better platform for long term mods and upgrades than for a basic car with just simple mods.

Regards, and hope to see you at rallies soon!
Mark B.

Road use fees and road permit avaiablity got tough to impossible, per what I understand. It in the Cherokee NF and the NF system can be highly variable as to their head ranger's view on using roads for rally. Some see it as an 'inappropriate use".

Anywhere from fee up.

Some, all depends where you look. I personally keep 2 or 3 parts cars around so I don't have to go to the junk yards. And I turn down more offers for parts cars than I accept.

SR20DET is what I'm running. These motors are bullet proff. 100% stock with only a decent 3" exhaust, front mount intercooler and 10lbs of boost it puts 220hp to the wheels. I can get these motor sets, engine transmission, harness ECU, everything ready to drop in for under $2000 CDN.

> *Know what an alternate Nissan ring and pinion

Yes the last one I bought cost me $350 US for a 4.625.

One thing about these cars is that there is huge aftermarket support. that doesn't make them suitable for rallying, but it doesn't hurt especially for things like good clutch type LSD's.

They do have shitty headroom, pretty crappy suspension travel too , but you need to change that anyway.

I'm not trying to say you should go for the 240SX just decide based on facts, not because John tried to scare you off what you wanted to do :-)

My total build costs were around $15k, which seems to line up with what it costs to build just about anything, well, from the groung up.

-Martin.

Martin, all your answers are what I was after.
Answwers with figures, not speculation or typical intra-web "It's no problem"

Note well the comment of "spare shells".

And the whole shebang Motor/box/ecu package.
That's VERY good (and yeah a SR20DET would be the logical choice)

It's just you don't see so many and drifty-boys have driven prices up for them.

any thoughts... hopefully in the next few weeks ill have a rally car to start working on over the summer.

Most have em have t-tops. Harder to find parts for but same motor and so on. It will probably not have much head room as well. I would definetely go with the SEr

rally gods would turn in their graves if they ever knew Lada's were now part of EU rallying!!!
