I have finally seen the light and I have developed a new obsession with the Mk1 and Mk2 european ford escorts.
if it weren't for my kids needing to ride in cars with airconditioning and modern safety equipment i would sell my subaru and get one as a daily dirver and another to turn into a rally car. which leads me to my dillema. life getting in the way. since i cant finance one with a loan i need to save my pennies to buy one. so i wont be buying 'till next year at the soonest. how much can i expect to pay for one here in the USA? and if i cant find one that i can afford or is worth buying what would a good alternative be? preferrably something that is allready in the states. i know the XR4Ti is a good alternative but i am looking for something a but older. same with the volvos. i want to have a back seat so the kids could occasionally ride in it before it is a rally car so a RX-7 is out. BMW 2002-like the styling and have a friend who used to road race them and is an excellent BMW mechanic. but they are getting expensive and hard to find. 510-like the styling but rust free examples are pretty scarce as well. older ford capri-i know very little about them RWD corolla-cool car but inflated value thanks to the drifting crowd. older volvo-unsure of the models and years but a old 2 door volvo would be fun. i have a feeling that the Escorts are going to end up being waaaay out of my budget. all i have found for sale online are fully prepped rally escorts in the UK that are all aorund 25 grand USD. so i have no idea what a escort street car is selling for in the US. Help me rally anarchy, you are my only hope. please smack me about the head and shoulders with a dose of reality. i can take it now. |

wow i post this and then jake posts his list.
escort would probably be wrong for me for rally unless i have tons of cash laying around for body panels. that being said i would still love to have a early escort for a street car. maybe build it up like a rally car minus the cage and big bucks suspension just for fun? |

That's a good place to find UK based cars. Big Ford forum. Contact North American Cosworth Specialists up in Vancouver. They import cars and lots of parts. Daz is good. Don't expect a quick email response from them though and I wouldn't contact them until or unless you're prepared to buy one (ie. don't waste their time.) Grant Hughes |

All this love for the Escort and all ...A car thats NOT here in the states ... Don't get me wrong ..I love them too.. Been doing a lot of leg work on the Escort do to a job thats comming up at my shop ...
And the Capri IS here in the states ..And is not loved ... And I may be talking out my ass here ..........BUT ...A Capri IS just a long Escort ... Thats what Mr JVL told me years ago ...I'm not old anuff to know this info... I was five years old whan they first came out over here .. ... And my girl drives a 71 Capri to work every day ...Kent motor,,3.90 gears,,soon to have a T9 trans ,,white out side,,black inside,,vinyl top and all .. Very fun car to play with ..I allways get in trouble for driving it like I stoled it ...LOL... And the gas mileage is realy good ... Have a 73 Capri setting up in northern Calif .. I have to go get ... I would "think" that with all the love for the Escort ...That there would be Capri's lined up in droves in America rally... Same car (""I think""... What's up with that..??? Yeah Dave, that "it's just a longer (100.5" wheelbase vs the Escorts 94.5" Escort" came froma guy Nigel Worsick who in the late 80s ran one in the BTRDA Silver Star series and even won an event or 2 Overall.
He said just move the engine back as much as you can and the balance is nearly the same. And we have them here. Again, aside from the cool factor, there' no particular advantage to a MkI or MkII Escort in North America. However for those inclined, a good friend is sorta commuting back and forth to Sweden where the prices for LHD Escorts are nowhere near the insane money the English are asking AND GETTING for anything vaguely Escort. We've seen street 1300s for as little as $800--NO RUST. Swedish Vehicle Inspection tolerates NO RUST anywhere critical. So if somebody WERE convinced, we have an ally there who knows we all have low budgets. But the Swedes solution is to build 240 Volvos as if they were building Escorts, same techniques in everything. And we have millions of 240s here already. Just a question of if you want flash or fun and results. Greg, don't saddle yourself with the MKI vs whatever thing, if I say I know a good RUST FREE MkII Capri for 1200 bucks, then you should jump on it. And I just happen to know a good RUST FREE MkII with a V6 (I think). V6 gets you the "Atlas axle" which you want. Pull the heads, mill them 040, deck the block 040 and pop in some 2.9 Ranger valves and one of my copies of Saab's V4 cam and you can have a light FAST car, cheeep cheeep cheeep! There's even a chance that delivery could be swung, sorta. If you're thinking Capri, and really with your budget and responsibilities you should be (versus a Escort) the place you need to know is "Team Blitz", the guy has mountains of Capri bits. Later, for motors, talk to me, I won't bullshit you, and I can help narrow your choices cause with any Euro Ford, there are LOTS of choices, and i have been making Ford rally motors for over 20 years now. I thought all Capris (Mk 1 & 2) came with Atlas axles except for the 1600 kent motored one that came with the English axle. www.performanceoptions.net |

Yeah the Capris even with the stock 8:1 compression ratios actually were pretty quick ebven more amazing when you consider the short stroke of the motor: 66.8mm (and a nice round 90mm bore) for the 2.6 (exactly the same as the mighty V4 1700) > > You should jump on Johns car...In three years you > may not find one ...No I take that back .. I've never been able to nail down exactly what diff came in the USA 1.6 cars. I am 90% sure its what the Anglais call the "English" axle and if so its the commonest axle in the Ford world, used LSD are cheap and plentiful in the UK. By the way, I believe the Kent motored cars got a 4.2 axle ratio. > > David > > Hazardous Toys inc > > > > > > > Edited 1 times. Last edit at Apr 14, 2007 by > Haztoys.
