OK,
they want 165 dollars.
I want to have fun.

mind you, the 3 other rallies i did without notes were a hell of a blast, and this rally i don't have to stay at a hotel, so this is within the budget.

the canadian events you make your own, And i'm doing Pacific forest later this year.

blah. yak.

tell me why notes are fun.

Notes can be fun for the codriver because the notes are more detailed, giving the codriver more stuff to call. They also can give the codriver a bigger role to play in the teams stage performance.

Some old-school codrivers still prefer to sit back, enjoy the h*ll ride, look for spectators who are titty flashing or mooning the passing cars and maybe call out a tulip instruction every mile or two.

Notes can be more fun, because when you review your in-car video, there is a navvie yapping out cryptic stuff full time almost like the WRC guys. Have your codriver try calling in a language and tonality that mimics Luis Moya or Fabrizia Pons for even more International flavor.

Writing your own notes is more work and usually adds another day or so to an aleady long "weekend", but I find that even more rewarding. My own notes usually make more sense to me. At least I can't blame someone else.

Either way, make sure it is still fun for everyone. The navvie can always toss the notes if things aren't gellin' and go back to tulips.

If it's within the budget, why don't you give it a try?

Try to get a co-driver who's experienced with notes though.

As a driver notes were ho-hum for me. Didnt make me faster, but it was reassuring to "know" what was coming up.

As a codriver notes were way better than routebook for me. Its more action and I felt like I was contributing more. Plus I'd throw on an accent occasionally to liven things up.

Unfortunate thing about notes as a codriver is that there was no time for me to be yanking the hyro ebrake for fun. Be forwarned, if I'm codriving for you on the routebook and you have a hydro handbrake I will pull it!

Guess it's what you get used to. Having done tulip routebooks only for a long time, I never felt that I was making less of a contribution; keeping one's odo spot on, and calling that "hairpin left over crest, double caution in .3", then .2, then .1, then counting down in hundreths to the action point, took some skill IMO, and kept a co-driver very focused.

My son and I still like to run routebooks only; I think that developing detailed road reading skills pays great dividends in the long run, and that you get there faster with routebooks. But we have done the stage note thing and enjoy that too.

I codrove for my pop at SnoDrift when it was all on Heny Joy's ranch in 94 or 95 and I did all the handbraking for him from the right seat.

If notes are in your budget for this event, I think you should give them a try to see how you like them.

I find it takes more concentration to use notes (for me) as a driver as well. Maybe others don't feel that way.

Notes are fun because you can go full tilt.

Its a LOT more fun to go full tilt without them. Fun Fun Fun. Man I gotta get back in a rally car soon. My favorite is some little cowtrail through the woods that's barely big enough for the car and to just fly through the thing running blind.

Reality check: I've learned that that doesn't work for long though. A good navvie with good delivery on notes saves body panels.

Right.

rallying is "new" everytime i've done it (this will be the 4th time)

tom brought up a great point.
paraphrasing here,
how fast you go, and how often you crash is Entirely up to the driver,
it's the codriver who can give you "hints"

but there is also a philosophical light that goes,
"the road never lies"

the disc never lies

I followed the parade the first time thru. No way I was gonna mess it up the second run.

Lemming #4 or 5.
