Who the hell says super bitchin videos are off topic??

Here's a vdeo I posted years ago on SS-furom on "Why the Finns are the Best in the World in Rally".

Cause they have more humor!

Hi Andrew, yes the beast mad itr all 5500 used no oil, got 30 mpg with Graham driving 75-80 the whole time except when it was coughing at some pass in Colorado at 12,000 feet.

Everything fine except I can't drive the car cause there's no front licence plate.

I wonder what happened to the plate????
(Where's the Kevvie bat??)

Are these 2 stroke cars when they were here? I was just watching some video on Youtube and some of them were 2 stroke.

The first SAAB model to be imported Stateside was the 93...which was powered by a 750cc two-stroke triple. The sporty version (desireable for rally) was also two stroke and was called the GT750....my dad had one when he was young! smiling smiley The wagon version was called the 95 and was also two-stroke. In 1960, the 93 was replaced with the 96, which looks largely identical from the outside, and came with the same 750, and later an 850 two-stroke. Sometime in the late-60's, the body style continued production, but switched to a 1500 four-stroke V-4 from Ford of Germany, which ruined the balance of the car in the minds of some purists. There was a variant of the two-stroke 96 called the Monte Carlo after SAAB's Monte win. As an aside, the first Sonett (not Sonnet!) was two-stroke, and so were some of the very early Sonett II cars...all are very rare and collectible these days.

BTW, thanks for sharing the awesome (and hilarious) vid. My dad has lots of stories of feeling smug for beating "faster" cars on snow in the little SAAB, and how invincible it felt when he had good tires and was in a groove. I always took it with a grain of saltshaker....who doesn't have inflated stories of the glory days of youth?..but now I am wondering...smiling smiley

There wasn't a plate on it when I picked it up in Bahstun. There was another mismatched plate in the car, but I never saw a front plate.

I figured you used it on your van. Or some Masshole stole it when Diane was driving it. =)

Glad the old beast made it out there. It certainly is fun to drive!

That was a stocker, ask Andrew about the one I built that he just babysat, sounds nastier than nearly all the current US Gp2 cars except Derek Bottles old Golf.
The green thing sounds nastier than my rallycar!

Crashlandingpad's green 96
June 12, 2007 12:05PM
The rusty green machine was a hoot. Loads of torque, probably helped by a good short final drive. One time many years ago when JV had his Sierra/Xratty concoction in my parents' old yard and he was around, I borrowed it to make a run to OtterZone or something. On my way out of town, somebody in a Rabbit GTI thought he'd pick on the weird looking car. A quick flip on the column shift back a gear, a bunch of throttle and the GTI was rapidly getting smaller in the rearview. Buh-bye, Saab wins!

They're lots of fun to toss around, get some weight on the front wheels, toss into turn, hit the throttle and it would just corner like mad. I think it was the first front driver that I didn't have my usual "You hit the gas it goes straight, you hit the brakes it goes straight, you turn the wheel the stupid front drive piece of shit goes straight!" problem. In no time I learned how to make a front driver turn...although I do often cheat and put the left foot on the brake pedal for some voodoo help with weight distribution with bigger heavier piggier front drivers (everything else).

I was hoping JV would want to unload the car for short money so I could terrorize the local rallycrossers with it (both on course and in the tech line). But he knew better and was eventually able to find a "volunteer" to fix it up to make a long trip and drive it out for him. If I was a "Party Animal" instead of "Settling Down", I probably would have been that person.

So, John, to complete the threadjack, what ARE the plans for the green car? Reshell into something less soft or spend a few days making a MIG Frankenstein monster? At least one knucklehead in Nude Hamster wants to know!
