Rallye Deutschland: SS14 cancelled in Germany after two deaths

The organisers of Rallye Deutschland have had to cancel SS14, the repeat-run through the daunting Arena Panzerplatte test, following a tragic accident.

The decision was taken after one of the drivers running in the historic section of the event went off the road in the 41.08 km test and crashed into some trees.

It has since been confirmed that both the driver and co-driver were killed – they have not been named.

No one else was injured.

An official statement on the Rallye Deutschland website read:

“It is with great sadness that the organiser can confirm an accident took place this afternoon at the Arena Panzerplatte involving a historic car participating in a non-competitive demonstration programme.

“The car, driven by a Dutch pairing, left the route near the Gina crest. The emergency services were on the scene immediately to assist but despite their best efforts the injuries sustained by both the driver and passenger proved fatal. No one else was involved in the incident.

“Everyone associated with the event extends their deepest sympathies and condolences to the families, friends and individuals who are being touched by today's terrible tragedy.

“The second passage of Arena Panzerplatte has been cancelled and the competition cars have been re-routed back to the Service Park in Trier.

"The rally will continue on Sunday according to its itinerary."

Always horrible to loose comrades in our sport. ;(

Is it me (my perception) or has this last 1.5 years been REALLY bad for overall causalities in European rallying? I don't recall things being so bad in the last 10 years preceding this period.

Again, my perception. Others?

No its not wrong. Zeroing in you'll notice I think 100% have been on asphalt..
With a regular simple surface it requires more budget and less brains/experience to go fast--ie BUY a 'max spec" motor, BUT a lot of new sticky tires and you have grip..You have grip and a "big" spec motor/box/axle you can go fast thru corners. You go fast THRU corners, you start the next straight at a higher speed--thanks not to judgement, just the tires...start the staright at 40 rather than 25..you reach higher speeds..

But asphalt is treacherous...or conting on lots of grip is dangerous.
Gravel guys don't "count on" LOTS of grip, they have to search for it, make judgements how much grip there is---and it takes skill gained thru experience to judge correctly .
Asphalt: buy tires, swap often..No thought.

And then of course there is car choice. The mentality of people attracted to asphalt is different, and since tires "guarantee" grip, many short, stupid, poor balanced cars like this latest TR7 get chosen...which can rotate 180 in a .25 second---which as we have seen with these online reaction time testers is faster than many can even react to.

But mainly its asphalt and the people attracted to it..It's "easier" so less motivated people do it..

I believe that the Margam Park stage of Wales is not on tarmac.

The subject began with the death of a poor misguided Dutch guy in Germany today--and then somebody commented
Quote

"Is it me (my perception) or has this last 1.5 years been REALLY bad for overall causalities in European rallying?"

Carefully analyzing the above comment the thing that seem that SHOULD jump out is the "last 1.5 years" and it was that I addressed...because he is right, there has been an unusually high number of deaths in the last couple of years.....as well as a surprising number of spinal injuries since introduction of mandatory HANS...another this weekend.

Now we all know you are an argumentative and aggressive keyboard warrior, so in your fervor to find error in others, perhaps you could explain to class which fatality in the last 1.5 years at Margam Park you were referring to....

Because Shirley, it could not be co-driver Parks because that was 2005, half a life span of the average reader here, nearly 8 full years ago.

Oh, you're absolutely correct, as always. When someone mentions the 10 years before the past 1.5 years and says that 100% of the deaths have been on tarmac, it was completely uncool, uncalled-for, and irrelevant to mention a death 8 years ago on gravel. You have 100% of the apology from me that you deserve.

I hate this aspect of racing. But it is something that must be weighed by all involved. Its always a possibility on any surface at any moment in any car. I will just leave it at that and send my thoughts to the loved ones and friends of the fallen. Rally on...

The guy killed himself and an innocent spectator in what should have been exhibition.. Your friend of a friend should have shown some restraint..

Words do not kill people, but foolishness does and did.
There's many kinds of tragedies, and the worst are the pointless ones.
When people just playing kill themselves because of lack of restraint it is one thing..
It is another thing when they kill others.

Typical Vanlandingham, posting 'facts' without doing his homework. The second death was the co-driver, not a spectator.

But, hey, reading a couple of stories about an accident that occurred a third of the way around the world and about which little information has been released puts you in a position to make authoritative statements about what happened, doesn't it?

Please continue, John. Some people here still believe your crap.

Hey asshole, fuck you with your typical asshole "typical Vanlandingham'. Got that asshole?
I've been working all day, the report I read this morning said Driver and a photographer. That was read at maybe 0745, the crash was around Noon CET..
Hadn't looked since.

So eat shit you so typical whiny bitch. .
Is that clear enough?
Its not important anyway. Who ever it was is dead because somebody lacked a sense of restraint playing with a POS TR7 which is why you're pretending to be offended.
You should show some pretend empathy for the guy who was killed by a drivers foolishness --who could remember the program uinder which these cars were allowed to drive was: "SLOWLY SIDEWAYS" ---did you miss that Alan?
Display, exhibition...ya know?
No reason to kill anybody---whoever the fuck it was...

As I mentioned above, as always, you are correct. I think what drives my students the most crazy is my tendency to be accurate the first time, followed closely by my ability to admit the rare error. Maybe I wouldn't have to deal with my classes being over-filled (and those annoying awards for teaching) if I took a new approach. One that comes to mind at this moment is switching to focusing on why my rare errors aren't my fault, rather than saying: "yeah, you're correct; I was wrong." Thanks for the tip.

Wow, just wow. For such a self proclaimed intelligent ultra communicator who speaks every language and dialect known as well as reading and writing Sumarian there are times you fall a bit short in adult conversation....

You're exceeding your normal caustic behavior. Feeling ok? Something wrong up there in Sleazattle? (seriously, you ok ? Need a Snickers? grinning smiley)

Get a boat. Man I had so much fun yesterday cussing the previous dipstick that hid wiring under the deck with 2..yes 2 inline fuse holders on a 2amp fishfinder. But I came home smiling.
