Great scenery for sure.

230 km (142 miles) of stage planned for the national (longest national of the year, although Pines hasn't got their regs up yet)

172 km (106 miles) of stage for the regional, longer than 3 of the nationals!

That may be but why shorter? Beginners more than anybody else need more seat time..
More is more, more is more than less.

Re: Rocky roads preview

(Like I didn't know this was coming eye rolling smiley)

CARS has an institutionalized belief that regional events / championships should be kinder, gentler and less demanding than the national events.

The reasons - not that I agree with them - range from a typical 'newbie's' stamina over longer distances to wanting to keep the costs down for regional competitors. (Obviously, every km of stage costs money to 'race' on - fuel, tires, brakes. etc.)

Now, when I was in a position to, I provided a way for the regional cars to get the full distance by entering multiple regionals with only one of them counting towards the regional championship. (as mandated by the region - they don't want people blowing two events in one weekend with a critical DNF on day 1)

But, I'm not on the rocky committee this year and had no input on the regional events. It seems there is no option other than Nat/Reg dual entry to get full mileage. (There is often pressure from the National Series Manager to do it this way... he is very 'protective' of regional competitors.)

Funny thing is we've regularly seen, at Rocky in the last few years, people who were perfectly able to enter 'both' regionals, or dual enter Nat/Reg events, opt not to and have their cars sit in a Parc Fermé while the rest are out being beaten up by the stage roads. We've also seen 'new' drivers fatigued to the point of making significant mistakes at the end of a regional length event... so there probably is some merit to restricting event lengths for regional only competitors. (to be eligible for a National license you just need to 'successfully competed in' two regionals, or one regional and have a recognized school under your belt. not exactly a high bar.)

Additionally, more is [edit] more, but [/edit] not always [edit] better. [/edit] Particularly first or second event entries likely hit a point of saturation during the day where they've taken in all they can and simply can't absorb anything new. Yes, there is value in repeating and repeating and repeating tasks, but at some point you will reach a point of diminishing returns.

Again, I'm with you on distance (particularly long stages!), but the sanctioning framework isn't.

Personally, I don't get it. I'd be out on the stages for as much as I could.

I enjoyed getting to go spectate the national guys on Sunday and party HARD on Saturday night with no worry or need for reprepping the car the one time the SCCA did that at Rally Colorado. Would have rather been racing, but okay.
Nice work on length!

Should be a great event.

100% new roads and new location, haven't seen that in Canada for a long time!

Last 'new' event in the championship was PFR about a decade ago, but the roads had been used in a regional before the National show came to town. Before that was, maybe, the move of Bighorn to Edson from Hinton, but that was before my time so I don't know if there were regional events on the roads before or not.
