Which Log Book to get
October 08, 2013 05:36PM
Ok, the time has finally come to get the xr logged. Who's logbook should I get (NASA or RA)? They honor each others, so is there an advantage one way or another?

Also, I seem to recall that an operating handbrake was required to pass tech. RA says that the handbrake must hold the car, NASA doesn't seem to say anything. Thoughts? Seems like a no brainier, but living in HI with rally car in Seattle makes every option very expensive. And it's unlikely to be used on stage due to rwd?

Even with RWD, its nice to have a good strong handbrake for hairpins.

Hydro with a bungy must pass tech cause I've seen that on a few cars.

You are worried about something that, in the long run, won't make a measurable difference. Take it to the closest inspector, or the easiest to schedule with inspector, check it off the list, and get on stage. smiling smiley

No benefit in having one logbook over another. I carry both in brands stock. A logbook is the history of the car, never a guarantee that you will get thru tech.

E-brakes, we don't check up here, even at RA nationals. I can't recall even seeing it on the tech sheet, but it may be there. I'll go look when I get a refill. I haven't actually checked since 2004 when I came out of retirement. Maybe I'll start.

Here's the deal (up here at least) I want you to run and have fun AND be safe. I don't give a rat's ass if your back-up lights work or your sun visors have mirrors. I want to see a well built cage, compliant belts and safety equipment. I want to see treaded tires and a car that isn't a danger to small kids and dogs. Fuel leaks..no go. Big oil leaks..no go. Scarey wiring...we'll talk. We don't live in a black and white world and tech shouldn't be that way either.

I've been hardassed because a scrut didn't like reflectors on my fenders instead of marker lights. My wheel bearings were too loose (they weren't..I do this every day for a living). My very expensive Mazda racing 5 speed had no provision for back up light switch. My chrome tubing bumpers weren't factory (Open class). My headlights didn't fit close enough to the grille for the FIA asswipe, he didn't like my 2" tall Formuling France trunk lip yet the Lancia guys had a more wings'spats and spoilers than a tuner convention at 7-11. When quizzed on it he replied that Lancia was Mafia and they could do as liked (seriously). I'm not that guy and my guys aren't either.

Thanks Gene. Common sense approach. I like that! Robert and I will work something out to get the car a log. Sounds like handbrake can wait a bit at least.

I'm with Gene on that 'cept if your backup lights don't work, I'll ding you in your logbook. Won't stop you from running unless it's something you had plenty of time to fix and still haven't.

Haven't ever checked ebrakes. Probably should. Most hydro ones seem to lose pressure after a couple of seconds anyway.

Bring a safe car and have fun.

Don't try to hide anything or pull a fast one - nothing pisses me off faster than that. If you've got a problem we'll discuss it. 90% of the time it won't stop you from running but you'll have to fix it before the next event. If you've tried to hide something and I catch it, I'm going to get pissy and start looking for other things you may've tried to disguise.

Case in point: someone came to an event once with all the date tags cut off their expired belts. Riled me up good.

"Oh, well look at that. Get back in line when you have some legal belts! Have a nice day."

I don't have a one month, one day, or one minute leeway/tolerance for that brand of silliness. 100% legal belts. What were they thinking?

This says 2008, not sure if it's current, but no mention of the hand brake:

With an RA book, you're teched to RA rules at NASA events.

With a NASA book, you're teched to NASA rules at NASA events and RA rules at RA events.

Which if I remember correctly requires using FIA seats for NASA cars, but not necessarily required for RA log book. However, NASA rule book makes no mention of expiration & replacement of FIA seats.

I've always made sure to know where a good power source is. At least once where back up light was turned on by me stuffing to hot wire into terratrip hole as driver went into reverse. Have seen a few cars where it is a switch on the dash.

I second that, it works great on the Panda.
