What I like most about Toni's M3 project - it give a chance for the mortals (us) to have a go at him. Sure his M3 is very nicely done but it cost no more then many of the cars running here in the USA - it is atainable.
When I see Toni's in car video I know he is doing that in a car I could have, where as when I see Lobe driving down a stage I have no idea how much is Lobe and how much is a car I will never drive. In the long run reality always wins. |

Well there you see the big dichotomy in the world, and the one that splits culture and some of the people's "vision"f what rally should be. With that car we, and I mean probably most of us here, identify and "relate" and think "Yeah! I can see me doing (something kinda) that!" Then there the others who wish us to be obedient consumers just watching a complete packaged thing, and even if it is rally cars spewing gravel, they're now only a small part of the "complete package", and some of us just aren't very good at being automoton like consumers (insert Homer Simpsonesque "must consume-must consume" > > > > See me go at: > www.11tenths.com > In the long run Reality always wins. That's why I like the S2000 class and am quite happy that the Eurosport coverage of the IRC is now watchable (but still not as good as the WRC coverage). I know you won't like this and it's a bit of an aside, but I think the reason why a lot of men in their 20s start drooling and fiddling in their pockets when they see a hot Subaru and could care less about a Focus... even though Subaru hasn't won a WRC event in living memory, while the Focus is quite successful in WRC. Is because you can pretend a hot Subaru is nearly a WRC car, but you'd have to be on some serious drugs to think the North American Focus is. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

Even the European Focus disappointed me in person. As did the Fiesta. At least the base model ones.
I'm sold on the Renault Clio R3. I was telling wifey that if we won powerball at 105 million I'd buy 6 of them. Two for US, two for Finland, and two for France. Tarmac rallies in France, gravel and snow in Finland, and hill climbs and Max Attack in the US. Matching his and hers Renaults. We'd be cool for sure. Grant Hughes |
Yeah, I'm not really surprised, even though I always thought that Ford Europe wasn't nearly as stupid as Ford North America. Even the base model Subaru with a manual is fun to drive.
His and Hers rally cars would be cool for sure! So your wife actually encourages your rally habit? Wow you're lucky Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

The point about at least with the WRX you are in something that is like the WRC car is yet another reason the whole WRC package has gotten silly and pointless. The WRC car rules made a few people happy and made a few others a lot of money but at the end of the day we now have a pro deal that is very far from what I can go do for my self, it changed from something we do to something we watch.

What are we arguing about here? I can go play Baseball right now, I'll be no where near the level of a Pro. Or I can go play football.. you get the point. If we are arguing about the ridiculousness of the cars in WRC, why should anyone care, WRC isn't even aired on North American TV (nor satellite as I understand it). Basically no one over here watches it anyways (seriously). As you know there are other series out there and no one watches that, but I can't even afford that. Actually, I've found that I watch less and less WRC. I bet there is a direct negative correlation between the number of minutes I watch WRC and the number of wins by Sebastien Loeb. Though it has increased my viewing of mid to late 90s - 2001 WRC Reviews and 2WD downloaded rally footage. Grant Hughes |

I can't get her to come work in the garage and she's never stoked when I work on cars instead of spending time together, but she's super stoked to race and codrive. She's fiercely competitive and hangs out with the rally crowd almost more than I do now. We plan to switch seats occasionally as well. She enjoys taking pictures of and spectating the hill climbs. I'm sure she'll be bored to tears spectating Cog this year, but hopefully I can get my shit together and she can spectate as a codriver. Grant Hughes |
