Most outlandish or "out there" vehicle you've ever seen rallying
August 06, 2007 06:42PM
I want to know. Was it a seventy year old farm tractor? Did it have an airplane engine? Talk to me o witnesses to the wacky, o reporters of the rallies...

...tell me what the wierdest most off-beat thing you've seen rallying happens to be.

International Harvester bloody huge pickup truck.
2nd place might have to go to John Lane's Fire Breathing Monster, the 500+HP Volvo...

I think that the east coast gets fewer of these things...

About 7 years ago I saw a wacky VW based kit car with what seemed like one foot wheel well extensions and weirdo wing.

1-Bill Holmes' full size Ford pickup. Saw that at STPR a while back. Big! Rear Drive! V-8! Really filled up those narrow roads!

2-Any Stratos. Those things were just plain bad-ass.

3-Sakis' VW/Audi sport-quattro wannabe contraption. AWD, turbo v-6, I think. Very cool concept!

Probably. In my memory it seems so much more exotic looking than that thumbnail. I must have been young and impressionable. winking smiley

it was widened 2" - used Audi 4000 front and rear subframes - 20v turbo beast.

Anders - looking at a thumbnail and listening, watching that thing blast through a corner - 2 very different animals...

1) The Buzzard Brothers' Olds Toroando; shortened by about 20 by cutting out a large part of the back seat area, with exhaust over the roof. The grill is from a Ford school bus of that era. Picture here: http://www.rallywv.com/rallyarchive/82nlights_toronado.jpg
2) A 70's V6 Merecury Carpi fixed up with 4WD from Ohio. It broke a lot....
3) Scott Harvey's 4WD Dodge Apen from the late 70's. Used a Tornado front drive and probably a Jeep transfer case. 360 V8 was set back about a foot and used a Torqueflite 727 auto trannie I believe. This car could challenge for the win in any rally of that era. The Dodge Ramcharger shown beside the Aspen in the picture was Scott's prior rally machine, nicknamed the 'Rhino'; it had been relegated to service truck when the Aspen came along. Picture here: http://www.rallywv.com/rallyarchive/harvey_aspen.jpg
4) A late 60's tube frame Camaro circle track car that showed up with street tags at the Happiness Is Sunrise rally (H.I.S.) in PA run in the 70's. (In the area genenraly just west of STPR)
5) The Kelmark GT kit car that ran in the 80's. I think it was from Alaska. The roof 'pods' were for helmet clearance; Lord help them if they had ever rolled!Picture here: http://www.rallywv.com/rallyarchive/kitcar.jpg

Lots of good pix at: http://www.rallywv.com/Rallywv-archive.htm

Enjoy!

The "Chadillac". I have pic here that I can scan. Early '70s Cadillac El Doradao 4 door. I know it ran a rally or two in the PNW. Ben has video of it. It had a short life, not sure where it is, but would sure be great to see again.
