Yup, the rule only mentions "metal" sticking out from your tires. Someone said "hey, what if you just used them for the uphill starts?" They might not last the whole stage, but they might get you 5 - 10 seconds on the start?

Annnnnd, you wouldn't even have to have them on for the transits.

How about even just REGULAR huge zip ties? I think I'm going to put on on my tire and just drive around with it, see how many miles it stays on for.

on I-40... i give it 2 exits.

Still not a bad idea to be prepared for Winterpocolypse though. Couple years ago I saw the method of spreading salt on 40 near Raleigh. It was a guy in the bed of a truck, throwing salt BY HAND on to the highway.
