Toyota RWD Rally car!!!!!
November 11, 2013 11:44PM
TMG 86 CS-R3 RWD RALLY CAR

Toyota is to develop a GT86 R3 rally car as part of its customer motorsport programme, it has been confirmed.

The rear-wheel drive sports car will be converted to R3 specification and made available to private competitors, with delivery expected for the 2015 season.

The car, which will be known as the TMG GT86 CS-R3, will have a six-speed sequential gearbox, limited slip differential, modified engine, adapted brakes and other upgrades. Drawing on the experience of developing the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car for the Nürburgring-based VLN series, TMG engineers plan to modify the base car to the 'maximum level permitted within the regulations'.

The TMG GT86 CS-R3 is targeted at private customers and is eligible for all FIA-sanctioned rallies, up to and including the World Rally Championship. Full specifications and pricing will be announced in the coming months.

“Rallying is in our blood at TMG so it is very exciting to announce that we will be expanding our rally operations,” said Nico Ehlert, principal engineer customer motorsport. “The GT86 CS-R3 promises to be a thrilling car on the rally stages; with rear-wheel drive we can expect some dramatic action which is sure to be entertaining for drivers and fans alike.

“Through our experience with the TMG GT86 Cup and the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car we have built a solid infrastructure for customer motorsport over the past few years. We will draw on this to deliver a reliable, safe and high-performance car, plus all the required technical support, for our customers.

“We expect demand to be high so we are looking forward to seeing a lot of GT86 CS-R3 rally cars in action from the beginning of the 2015 season.”

The announcement strengthens TMG's commitment to customer motorsport and rallying, both of which represent key aspects of its long-term business strategy. With a Yaris R1A already launched plus the ongoing development of a Global Race Engine, TMG is expanding and strengthening its knowledge of rallying and drawing on its proud history in the sport. TMG's very existence is founded on rally, having begun life in Cologne in 1979 as Toyota Team Europe (TTE). Under Ove Andersson, the company went on to win four drivers' and three manufacturers' World Championships.

Good to see Toyota building a FIA spec car. I wonder if you will be able to buy the parts stateside. However, their definition of privateer $$ is likely too spendy for most current rally competitors in the US.

Now this being Rally Anarchy, the question on everyone's mind is will it be faster than a Volvo 240 ???

On asphalt doubtless will be... and handle better..in good hands

But this whole class is aimed at German and to a smaller degree French asphalt events..

Not exactly what we do here..

And of course there's the cost be now we know that people are loaded...eye rolling smiley

i believe i'm
they did a major rebuild that end with a museum quality car

i would use some more modern parts but the body would look very much the same.
or just a clean groupe 4 clone, 4 cylinder rwd good times all a round!

when i get back home to the south west i may start that project or the nissan 240rs project or both
where i'm at now those cars don't exist any more, like the xr4ti and the volvo 240 victims of the elements the lack of an economy and the crusher.

i'm looking forward to seeing the new 86 on stage

Yeah, of course.
For many of the boys building things in the last XX years it presents a wealth of details and a reinforcing of a lot of the stuff I say is normal rally car prep, but that is argued against by guys that maybe can't hold a wrench, much less weld on panel to another.

Those Celicas showing its not just the Escort that got added: turrets, long link boxes, chassi rail engine mounts, BIG gearbox and BIG axles, BIG brakes..

Normal prep.
